All Hallow's Eve is around the corner... so here's a lil preview...
“There used to be a saying amongst our kind...”
Geralt’s voice was calm and confident as he spoke, though there was an icy undertone to every breath. It was clear to me that he hated this man and may end up dispatching his head from his shoulders at any given moment, though a stranger would probably never notice the severity in his breath as he enunciated the words. I always admired his ability to maintain his composure even when addressing a potential enemy, I certainly couldn’t boast the same.
“Your kind?” He asked, his tone bore an edge of incredulity and disdain, but it was nothing more than I’d expected.
“Witchers.” I corrected.
“If a man can’t protect his own, he’s not a man at all.”
“But you’re not a man…”
“Good thing, or else you’d already be dead!”
It was truly amazing how five little words could dictate whether someone lived or died, and this mewling cockroach was no exception. I was going to enjoy watching what happened next.
It started a few years ago. The sightings, the attacks, the weird ass celestial phenomena accumulating around the world that various governments labeled as 'super-storms'. We knew the shift was coming as soon as we arrived here, but nothing could have prepared us for what was about to happen. In an age before electricity perhaps these peaceful days would have lasted longer, but the entirety of the human race was speeding headlong over the edge into the digital abyss and no one gave a f**k about anything that actually mattered anymore.
Once upon a time humans believed in true magic, in cryptids, in the Old Gods, and all the wonders and horrors in between.. they didn't rely on the unverified personal gnosis of their hopelessly ignorant reality to deliver them from all the evils of the world. They accepted that they were just one small spec in a vast ocean of greater power and made an effort to earn their right to keep their corner of it. Back then, this was as much a part of life as their morning coffee or their pop culture podcasts.
I both loved and hated the modern age. Technological advancements were admittedly often awe inspiring, yet for every step towards scientific perfection, wisdom and true discernment of the arcane was lost to the faded pages of books long since abandoned. Laziness bred automation into every aspect of life, and with it the mechanical stench of metal, plastic, and deadening sterility that was void of all organic components whatsoever. Even people became disposable commodities that could be culled en-masse at the push of a button... self defense was traded in for government protection, it was supposed to be the face of progression in making a safer more civilized society; yet all it did was take away the fundamentals of humanity's primal instinct to survive.
Now, it's all a joke. Instead of real warriors we have actors, video games and live action roleplay. Grown men that have never held a real sword or known what it is to bleed, those that have never experienced the blood curdling terror of true self sacrifice for something bigger than themselves, and have never felt the tender warmth of a woman's touch. People spend their whole lives in a virtual reality until they waste away and disappear, leaving nothing but the echoes of their lonely souls as a digital footprint on social media.
This world no longer catered to Witchers or Sorcerers, we were all but a myth.. a scary bedtime story told to children. Bards however, oh dear lord, bards became worshipped as the new gods... and holy s**t was Priggy loving it! For the rest of humanity though, it was a different story. A new conjunction was coming. It was all about to end, and it had to.
Lock all the doors and kill the lights
No one's coming home tonight
Sun beats down, don't you know?
All our lives are growing cold, oh
They bring news that must get through
Dying dreams in me and you
Oh, ooh
They're locked in a place where no one goes...
