1996... the year that broke broadcast radio. The Telecommunications Act of 1996. When art, heart, and personality were ripped from FM radio, to from then on be measured based exclusively on record sales while putting superficiality on a pedestal through applying tried-and-true, simplistic tropes and formulas so as to appeal to society's lowest common denominator, thus maximum sales. Individual and collective talent, alongside legitimate critical response, are a distant second priority, if considered important at all. 1996... the year most deeply thoughtful and soulful artist/musicians were replaced with the likes of celebrity clowns we refer to as "recording artists". In just under one week-1/2, on Saturday, March 12, please join me for CHILDREN OF A LESSER GOD, when I will be hosting the first of many outstanding, highly-curated, genre specific events to come at Portside Lounge.
The night of Saturday March 12 I'm gonna introduce you to Post-Punk. The first couple hours is for listening, drinking, talking, laughing, and bouncing around with new friends and old. Once fueled-up, and our joints and our inhibitions are properly lubed, WE DANCE!
For those of you who are unfamiliar with post-punk, here's a chance to blow your mind wide open with music that not only touches the soul with complex rhythms and archetypal themes but also taps into our collective primal roots with driving percussion.
Certainly, there'll be lots of familiar material, but to be clear, this ain't gonna be no namby-pamby "80's Night", greatest hits of Joy Division kinda thing. Because everything old is new again, my intent is to introduce not only the hits but the numerous bands and great songs that fell by the wayside, by either being lost, beneath-the-radar, forgotten, rare, foreign imports, or not given air- or floor-play; including deep cuts, demos, alternate takes, and outstanding, never before heard songs.
So, please invite friends and share this post on social media!
