Today marks the 80th Anniversary of D-Day, a pivotal point in history not only for our nation but for the entire world.

We remember the more than 150,000 allied troops involved in this historical mission today and everyday as we enjoy our liberty and freedom here at home and around the globe. We thank them for their service and valiant answer to the call of duty.

Pictured is Canal Barge Company’s very own, original M/V Bull Calf, designed by CBC in collaboration with General Motors and built in 1939 by Nashville Bridge Co. M/V Bull Calf was the first towboat to feature a clutch and reversing gear that enabled the vessel to go from full speed ahead to full speed astern in eight seconds. This revolutionary clutch and reversing gear became the model for U.S. landing crafts throughout World War II.

Our Vessel Officer Workshop series has wrapped up for the year! Here is a quick look into all three workshops held over the last three months. The vessel officer and shoreside teams joined together to discuss and collaborate on important operational objectives including safety, precise barge inspections, towing system optimization, and crew development. We are extremely grateful for our time together connecting, learning, and celebrating our milestones with one another! Thank you to the @wwiimuseum for the opportunity to visit and have an up-close look at PT-305 in her permanent home on the museum’s campus as a part of our workshops. We are honored to have played a role in transporting this important piece of U.S. history to its current location for all who visit the museum. Thank you to all vessel officers across the Canal Barge Company fleet and your families for making the 2024 Vessel Officer Workshop series a success. We look forward to a safe and outstanding remainder of 2024!

Today and everyday we celebrate the dedication and service of our mariners throughout the fleet. Wishing you and your families a safe and happy #NationalMaritimeDay!

Watch this short video about the career opportunities and benefits of a career on the waterways from the American Waterways Operators. You can hear directly from our nation's mariners about the value of the work they do for the country and for their own lives and families!

The National Waterways Foundation commissioned a peer-reviewed study by Texas A&M to compare the safety, environmental and efficiency of different modes of transportation (truck, rail, barge) for cargos. Major findings: –Emissions: Barges are 43% greener than rail and 833% greener than trucks in terms of fuel efficiency. –Spills: 200-300% fewer incidents than truck and rail per 1000 gallons transported. –Safety: for every 1 barge-related injury there are 96 rail and 1145 truck injuries. Visit nationalwaterwaysfoundation.org for more information about the benefits of transportation of critical cargos by water!

As we enter the 4th of July weekend, CBC's President & CEO Merritt Lane shared a message with the CBC Family: "I want to thank everyone who is on duty during this holiday weekend and encourage you to stay focused and fit for duty in every respect. As we know, the roads will be packed and recreational vessels more abundant on our waterways. Please stay aware and vigilant and do your part to look after one another. For those who are away from work, I hope you get to spend time with friends and loved ones. That said, CBC’s medical advisors tell us that the Delta variant of COVID-19 is extremely contagious and becoming more prevalent, especially in many of the places our employees call home. As you know, we care for our people and want to do all that we can to encourage and support you in your efforts to keep yourself and others safe and well. Your actions make a difference - we are all in this together! Again, I want to wish you all a very happy 4th of July and to thank you for all that you do for the CBC Family." Please stay S.A.F.E.!

Today we honor the sacrifices of all those who ensured the freedom we enjoy today. Thank you from the CBC Family.
