Wild Squirrel
Squirrels are members of the family Sciuridae, a family that includes small or medium-size rodents. The squirrel family includes tree squirrels
Andean squirrel (Sciurus pucheranii)🐿️🐿️
-The little reddish-brown Andean squirrel is a tree squirrel that lives high up in the Andes and is nearly solely found in Colombia. It is typically found in the cloud forests and rainforest of the Colombian Andes at elevations between 6,600 and 10,800 feet (2,000 and 3,300 meters).
However, due to this squirrel's limited range, not much is known about its behaviors or life cycle. However, depending on who you ask, it might be separated into three subspecies.
Daily life of a grey squirrel
The grey squirrel is diurnal and most active at dawn and dusk, searching for available food. Compared with the red squirrel, it spends more time foraging and feeding on the ground than in the trees. It is also very agile in the trees and can run along slender twigs, leaping from tree to tree.
Grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis)
The grey squirrel is well known to us as it is widespread throughout British gardens and parks. Some consider it to be an athletic and entertaining little creature, but it can certainly be a great nuisance in the garden, particularly if you are a bird lover.
Squirrels
In Britain we have our native Red Squirrel and the introduced Grey Squirrel. More recently Black Squirrels, which are a colour variant of the grey squirrel, have been observed in several southern counties of the UK.
Threats to Red Squirrels
The main threat to red squirrels comes form the grey squirrel. When grey squirrels arrive into an area of woodland the resident red squirrels usually disappear within 5 to 15 years. No one is sure exactly how this happens but it is believed that the grey can out-compete the reds in accessing food and as a result the reds starve and become unable to gain enough weight to successfully breed.

They move from tree to tree jumping upto 20 feet. When in danger, the Ratufa indica often freezes or flattens itself against the tree trunk, instead of fleeing. A wonderful camouflage mechanism indeed!
Squirrels Are Nature’s Seed Dispensers
Observing squirrels is like watching Ocean’s Eleven, Fast and Furious and The Goonies all rolled into one. They routinely pull off bird feeder heists and meticulously hide their precious provisions, fervently hunting for them later like misplaced car keys.
But first let's talk a bit about squirrels in general. There are more than 270 known squirrel species today, and they're categorized into three groups: tree, ground and flying. They originated in what is now North America, and they are considered endemic to all continents except Australia and Antarctica.

At Animal Remover, we do everything we can to apply the most humane methods possible to safely capture animals that have made your home theirs. Squirrel removal is a pretty typical job for the Animal Remover team, but some people have a different method of squirrel removal: taming them.
The Indian giant squirrel or Malabar giant squirrel (Ratufa indica) is a large multi-coloured tree squirrel species endemic to forests and woodlands in India. It is a diurnal, arboreal, and mainly herbivorous squirrel. It has been recently discovered that many species of squirrels and chipmunks see in a different light frame than humans. If viewed using lense enhancements it causes them to glow bright neon colors in the dark.(mainly for mating purposes).
Squirrels are omnivores which means they eat a wide variety of nuts, seeds, fruits, fungi, vegetation, eggs, insects, and meat. Squirrels are opportunistic eaters which means they will often eat foods that are not good for them. Baby squirrels will drink their mother’s milk for the first 6 weeks after they are born.
In many parts of the country, the lead-up to winter is a busy time for squirrels, furiously collecting and hiding acorns and nuts for the cold months ahead. But how can squirrels recall where it has stashed all its stores? And what can studying squirrels tell researchers about memory, learning, and economic decision-making in other species?
After climbing a tree in the middle of the Yukon forest, I looked into a squirrel’s nest and found a pup that clearly did not belong there. It was older and larger than the others in the litter. My research team and I collected DNA from the whole litter and later, back at the genetics laboratory, the mystery was solved
I realize this fact may not come as news to you. Still, I think a little reflection reveals how the primacy of our perspective underscores one of the most profound questions in science and philosophy.
You might have seen squirrels running after each other up and down trees or across a lawn. I often see them running circles around my big oak tree at full speed. But why do squirrels chase each other? The reason can vary depending on the age of the squirrels and whether they are male or female. Let’s explore the behaviors of squirrels and find out more about why they often “play tag” (and if they’re even playing!
Squirrels have young from January to September, and the babies will usually stay with their parents for up to four months. To find food for the offspring, squirrel parents often have to incur long distances, which often lead over busy roads or urban areas.
The word "squirrel", first attested in 1327, comes from the Anglo-Norman esquirel which is from the Old French escurel, the reflex of a Latin word sciurus, which was taken from the Ancient Greek word σκίουρος (from σκία-ουρος), skiouros, "shadow-tailed", referring to the long bushy tail which many of its members have.
In most squirrel species, the hind limbs are longer than the fore limbs, while all species have either four or five toes on each foot.
The oldest squirrel fossil, Hesperopetes, dates back to the Chadronian (late Eocene epoch, about 40–35 million years ago), and is similar to modern flying squirrels.
Squirrels are members of the family Sciuridae, a family that includes small or medium-size rodents. The squirrel family includes tree squirrels, ground squirrels, chipmunks, marmots (including groundhogs), flying squirrels, and prairie dogs amongst other rodents. Squirrels are indigenous to the Americas, Eurasia, and Africa, and were introduced by humans to Australia. The earliest known fossilized squirrels date from the Eocene epoch, and among other living rodent families, the squirrels are most closely related to the mountain beaver and to the dormice.
