Personal Care
People often take for granted the things they do every day, like climbing stairs, taking care of personal hygiene and even just getting out of bed in the morning. But these things can become major challenges as you age. In many cases, loved ones think the only solution is to put their older family members into nursing homes. Right at Home’s caregivers can provide personal care with dignity and respect, so the home can be a place of comfort, not frustration.

Mobility Assistance: Mobility isn’t just a matter of safety—it’s a matter of freedom. Right at Home’s caregivers have been trusted to help preserve that freedom for seniors and adults with disabilities across the country. We can help you with:

Caroline Thomas, an 81-year-old with a lifelong sense of adventure, has spent the past 40 years volunteering with the Casualties Union, a charity that simulates realistic emergency scenarios to help train first responders. Her journey began when she took a first-aid course in Cape Town and later volunteered with St John Ambulance in London. Intrigued by the idea of playing the role of a casualty in emergency drills, she quickly became involved in more advanced training exercises. Over the years, Caroline has simulated countless life-threatening injuries, from being shot and stabbed to being rescued from burning ships and car wrecks.

Despite the intensity of these drills, Caroline finds the work incredibly rewarding and believes it’s crucial for emergency services to train in realistic scenarios. Her dedication has made her a senior instructor, allowing her to pass on her experience to new recruits. Caroline's passion for her volunteer work keeps her feeling young, and she plans to continue her role well into her later years, preferring the thrill of training exercises over more traditional pastimes.

How To Tell That Your Aging Parent Needs Help at Home

Watching a parent go through health issues as they age can be difficult. You worry about them and want the best for them. Whether you live in the same city and see them frequently or you live in a state far away, there are things you can look for when you visit to help determine whether they would benefit from assistance with household tasks and other activities of daily living.

First: Where To Look for Signs - There may be clues in several areas of the home that may signify help is needed. Here are some specific areas to pay attention to.

The kitchen is a good place to start. If expired food is in the fridge and pantry, it may indicate that your parent isn’t eating right or is having trouble managing grocery shopping. Are there dirty dishes in the sink or on the counter? Are crumbs littering the floor? Are there burned-out overhead lights? Is the trash can overflowing? Any of these could be signs that your aging parent is overwhelmed and unable to keep up with household tasks.

Bathrooms can reveal several things. Is there clutter on the countertop? Are there dirty towels and clothing on the floor? Does it appear that the toilet hasn’t been cleaned in a while? Is there grime and soap scum in the tub or shower? Are there outdated prescription bottles?

Superfoods: Do They Help Seniors Stay Healthy? Defining “Superfoods”

The term “superfoods” doesn’t have a strict scientific definition, and it’s not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. Rather, it’s a marketing term used to describe foods that are thought to be nutritionally dense and thus good for one’s health. Superfoods are said to be rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. They are acclaimed for their potential to ward off chronic diseases, extend life expectancy, and enhance overall well-being. Person-Centered Cognitive Support

Millions of Americans live with cognitive change, a decline of mental functioning that can affect memory, reasoning, language and judgment. Cognitive change, outside of the natural aging process, stems from a number of causes including head injury, stroke and neurological conditions.

Nationwide, an increasing number of family caregivers are independently caring for their loved ones who are experiencing cognitive change. Over time, these family caregivers may find they need support from professional care providers, like Right at Home, to ensure their loved ones are receiving the specialized care required for a person living with progressive cognitive change. Nutritional Guidance for the Top 3 Chronic Diseases in Older Adults: Say Yes to These Foods for Healthier Senior Years

Fruits and vegetables. Add color to your plate! Your diet should be as colorful as a rainbow. Different colors in fruits and vegetables mean different nutrients that your body needs. Fill your plate with greens like spinach, reds like apples, and oranges like carrots.

Whole grains. Instead of white bread or regular pasta, opt for whole grains like brown rice, whole wheat bread, and oatmeal. Whole grains help regulate blood sugar levels and support heart health.

Lean proteins. Incorporate lean proteins such as fish (salmon and tuna), which are rich in beneficial fats, and skinless poultry like chicken and turkey. Plant-based proteins like beans and lentils are also excellent for muscle strength without burdening your heart or blood sugar. At Right at Home, our core values are more than just words; they guide everything we do. That’s why we created the RAH-k Stars program, where colleagues recognize each other for living these values every day. At our bi-weekly staff meetings, we celebrate those who exemplify accountability, approachability, integrity, collaboration, and authenticity. All recognized employees are entered into a swag drawing, and some even get a shot at our annual $2,000 travel voucher.

We’re thrilled to announce that Molly Schroeder is this year's lucky winner! Congratulations, Molly, and thank you for being a shining example of our values!

Why Is Staying Hydrated So Important for Seniors?
Hydration is serious business. Proper hydration promotes improved brain performance, digestion, and healthy weight management. Staying hydrated can improve cognition, stabilize emotions, help manage anxiety, boost energy, decrease joint pain, regulate body temperature, prevent the formation of kidney stones, and reduce the incidence of headaches. It also maximizes the body’s natural detoxification system. Fluids replenish the body, flushing what needs to come out and helping keep everything in a well-lubricated working order.

Lack of adequate fluid intake can contribute to muscle cramping, memory loss, mood swings, lack of concentration, and impaired reaction time. It can also manifest in headaches, confusion, urinary tract infections, and constipation.

But just because an older person doesn’t feel thirsty doesn’t mean they are properly hydrated. https://youtu.be/cAG8nazKdrE?utm_source=Facebook&utm_campaign=Facebook&utm_medium=Facebook&utm_name=Facebook
