Chemical sunscreens with filters like avobenzone and octinoxate absorb UV rays and convert them to heat. These sunscreens are easy to rub in and should be applied at least 15 minutes before going outside. Meanwhile, a physical sunscreen that has titanium dioxide or zinc oxide as active ingredients will sit on top of the skin and reflect UV rays. Physical sunscreens are good for people with sensitive or acne-prone skin. They are effective as soon as they’re applied on the skin but can leave a white cast. Some sunscreens are hybrids and contain both physical and chemical active ingredients. Whichever type of sunscreen you choose, make sure that it has SPF 30+ and to reapply every two hours!

As a runner training for fall marathons, one of the biggest challenges isn’t building endurance–it is preventing blistering from chafing. It is a type of skin cancer that involves keratin and not melanin. SCCIS is usually a slowly enlarging red scaly plaque also known as Bowen's disease. Precursor to SCCIS is ACTINIC KERATOSIS. The most common precursor lesion for SCCIS is Actinic Keratosis (AK). AKs are atypical keratinocytes found in the basal layer of the epidermis. AK's are found on sun-exposed sites, mainly on the face, ears, and hands. Note: “IN SITU” is a Latin phrase for "on site" or "in position" or "locally". This means that the squamous cell carcinoma is localized on and is NOT invasive What treatments are available? -Skin shave, curettage, and electrocautery for low-risk tumors on trunks and limbs -Aggressive cryotheraphy for very small, thin, low-risk tumors -Mohs surgery for large facial lesions with indistinct margins or recurrent tumors -Radiotherapy for an inoperable tumor (for those unsuitable for surgery) PLEASE NOTE: Skin cancer caught early is 100% treatable. Mohs surgery involves surgically removing skin cancer layer by layer and examining the tissue under a microscope until healthy, cancer-free tissue around the tumor is reached. It has the highest success rate of all treatments for skin cancer--up to 99% 👏👏👏 . . In my lab, I use a microscope to examine the undersurface and edges of each section of tissue in search of evidence of remaining cancer. If I find cancer cells under the microscope, I mark their location and return to the patient to remove another deeper layer of skin--BUT ONLY from precisely where the cancer cells originated. This method ensures that the surgery results in the smallest scar possible. . .
