Toega also known as “yoga for your toes” is a fun game with an important purpose. Toega strengthens the muscles in the feet, which are essential to both the balance and posture of the lower body. It increases toe dexterity helping to stimulate better coordination between the mind and the feet. Toega requires toe spreading to pick up and release pom poms. By spreading the toes, children and adults can improve strength and flexibility. To experience the benefits of Toega, join us for Family Yoga on Monday evenings from 5-6 P.M. at Loft on Main in Windermere. Visit www.loveandlightkidsyoga.com to preregister and for more information.
Y is for Yoga! Thank you Castleview Elementary for letting me share yoga with the Kindergarten classes today!
Anjaneyasana is a heart opening yoga posture. This low lunge pose is the perfect combination of balance, backbend, and stretch. Anjaneyasana helps children develop balance and coordination, as it requires them to have one leg forward and one leg back. Once they find their balance, they must focus and concentrate to find stability. There is the option to lift arms above the head. Raising the arms supports the lift of the chest allowing the heart muscles to open and the lungs to expand. This leads to improved breathing and increased blood circulation.
Energetically, this asana expands the heart space to welcome in feelings of love, compassion, empathy and gratitude towards ourselves and others. Heart opening postures have the power to boost self-confidence, positively affecting the way children see themselves and how they view the world around them.
Tree pose is well known in children and adult yoga classes alike. As a classic standing posture, tree pose helps to establish strength and balance while requiring centered, steady focus and grounding.
Tree pose is especially beneficial for children because it promotes focus and concentration while helping to improve balance. Since focus, concentration and balance can be difficult for some children, tree pose offers an opportunity to enhance these skills while building confidence in the process. Children learn coordination and mental focus as they progress through each variation of the pose.
Tree Pose is suitable for all ages because it lends itself to different modifications based on skill level. Children can begin with the sole of their foot below their knee and move it higher up their leg, once they are more comfortable. Hands can be together in front of the heart to start. Arms can be extended out to the sides and eventually raised above the head as balance is found. Eyes look down to promote grounding but the gaze can move straight ahead or up to challenge concentration and focus. We invite you to come and give Tree Pose a try this Saturday at 3:00 P.M. Hope to see you then!
Downward Facing Dog Pose is a popular pose for good reason. As both a stretching and strengthening asana, downward dog provides balance for the mind and body.
Downward Facing Dog is integral for kids because it helps strengthen their core and improve circulation as an inversion. All inverted poses, where your heart is above your head, encourage blood flow and serve to both energize and calm your body. This is especially important for kids because they can practice self regulation while building their core muscles.
If a child has poor core strength, they may have difficulty with fine and gross motor skills which includes handwriting and control of large body movements. Weak core strength can also be seen as the inability to sit still or a preference to drape the body over a desk, wiggle or change position. Join us Saturday afternoons at 3:00 P.M. to experience the benefits of Downdog and many other poses.

“If gratitude became a mandatory subject in schools, we would see a generation of children who would advance our civilization through
spectacular accomplishments and discoveries, obliterating disagreements, ending wars, and
bringing peace to the world.”
Child’s pose is more than just resting pose. It provides both children and adults a sense of grounding and focusing. Placing your forehead on the floor or mat sends a signal to your brain that you are safe and in turn calms the nervous system.
Child’s pose allows children to take a break from the busyness around them and to tune into their thoughts and feelings. By focusing on their breathing and settling their mind, they can better express their emotions. Child’s pose is also beneficial in stretching the lower back and hips. Try it out at home or with us on Saturdays at 3:00 P.M.
Even though there is no yoga class today, you can revisit our read aloud from last week. A Little Spot of Anger is just one of many in the series. Through this book, children learn how to calm their “anger spot” by touching each “angry” finger to their “calm” thumb. The best part about this book is that we use this same hand motion to calm our bodies and minds in our “Peace Begins With Me” meditation. Join us next Saturday for a new read aloud, meditation, and yoga poses!
