Cosmetic chemists have a very unique role in product development. We have to find the intersection between product functionality and positive consumer perception. While developing a formula with efficacy is fundamental, the true artistry lies in formulating an elegant composition that guarantees a noteworthy consumer experience. Not only do we have to ask if this product works, but we also have to consider… do consumers enjoy using this product? Will they want to pick it up again? What are consumers likely thinking during the application?

Did you know that the FDA recognizes sexual lubricant as a Class II Medical Device? These products are considered be moderate to high risk because they come in contact with consumers either topically, internally, or orally. Make sure that before marketing a personal lubricant you submit a 510(k) to the FDA and any other premarket applications.

What makes a product foam? 🧼

The answer: Surfactants! Foam occurs when surfactants reduce the surface tension of water and packets of air gets trapped in the water.

P.S. Did you know that the amount of foam doesn’t determine how well your product will clean? It’s really more about consumer perception, which is still pretty important!
