The Townhouse Piano Bar of New York

The Townhouse was founded in 1989 by business partners, Paul Galluccio and Robert DeBenedictis--their intention was to create a different bar from the dark and dingy establishments catering to gay men at the time. They wanted to lure in the businessmen from Park and Madison Avenues and they accomplished it by offering a more sophisticated experience that included daily piano entertainment.

Though a lot has changed since 1989⎯ what once was a one-room cocktail lounge is now three distinct bars all under one roof ⎯ but, the upscale piano lounge on 58th Street, between 2nd and 3rd Avenues, is still the place to be for the posh gay set. The bar presents a friendly atmosphere, neither pretentious or stuff, yet attracts a well-educated, distinguished and cultured crowd from different ages, cultures, and geographical locations. And, yes -- a dress code has been enforced since 1989--basically business casual and no hats.

The front bar opens daily for Happy Hour from 4 pm to 9 pm. The Grand Piano Bar opens at 6 pm, but that time changes depending on the season. One thing is certain, The piano Grand Piano Bar, especially, is a city favorite. Weekdays at 6pm (weekends at 8 or 9pm) some of the top piano players in New York including veterans Rick Unterberg and Michael Ferreri begin tickling the ivories. It's a lively scene with gay men and a few ladies gathering round the piano to belt out their grand Broadway tunes, an aria, a Spanish ballad, or some unheard-of- song. There are many events that range from Happy Hour Monday, Open Mic & Talent Tuesday, Latin Nights on Wednesdays, Business Greet & Mingle Thursdays, among others that change from time to time.

Then there is the third bar downstairs, The Club Room, which opens on Fridays and Saturdays at 9 pm. The Club Room is more of a Speakeasy--many don’t know it’s there. The bar offers a less crowded atmosphere with song videos playing in a more cozy set up. The Club Room has a history of its own, for it was the place to retire and have a conversation with a special person one might have met upstairs. Over the years, it has been a sports bar, a go-go boy dance bar, and in 2019 it was restored to its former self.

The Townhouse changed management in 2019.

The new manager, Roger Snyder, introduced a more upbeat ambiance that included more stylish black Townhouse shirts, more piano talent, and a reinvigorated Club Room.

In the past few years since Mr. Snyder took over, The Townhouse had been accused of catering exclusively to an older clientele, of changing from an exclusive bar to a go-go boy establishment, among other fabrications. Focusing on great customer service and branding, Mr. Snyder was quick to stick with The Townhouse original mission to provide a home away from home, great entertainment and customer service, to a diverse customer base of both younger and older patrons.

Michael Ferreri was promoted to Musical Director that year. Together, Mr. Snyder and Mr. Ferreri started the Sunday Salon Series, which goes from 6 pm to 8 pm. The Series introduces different artists each Sunday in a more intimate, loungy set up. Open tabs for patrons were put into place.

That same year, The Townhouse was featured in the show, “Almost Family,” episode 11. In fact, the manager was hired as an extra on the set.

We are optimistic for the future and a lot of great changes to improve our services.
