Vicki Leona Nguyen: Grantee of the Month - July 2024
We’re excited to introduce our new Grantee of the Month series, where we spotlight our talented grantees, their work, and the music that inspires them. ✨
Our first Grantee of the Month is Vicki Leona Nguyen (Creator Fund 2024)! Based in NYC, Nguyen is a Vietnamese-American composer, performer, and multi-media artist. Her work explores the psycho-social - or rather the intangible relationships - between all of us, both within and outside of the bounds of music.
Watch this video to learn more about Vicki and her New Music USA-funded project, “Ginger Flavored Bubblegum”, which explores the multiplicity and transcendence of grief through poet, filmmaker, and artist Theresa Hak Kyung Cha's seminal and last published work, "Dictee."
🎧 Vicki also curated a wonderful playlist for us that includes some of her favorite music right now. Check it out on Spotify or YouTube!

OFFICIAL TRAILER | INVISIBLE NATION
Reel Change awardee Wei-San Hsu’s funded work, Invisible Nation, had its theatrical release in New York at the Quad Cinema, and will come to theaters in LA on June 20! 🎞️
With unprecedented access to Taiwan’s sitting head of state, director Vanessa Hope investigates the election and tenure of Tsai Ing-wen, the first female president of Taiwan. Thorough, incisive and bristling with tension, Invisible Nation is a living account of Tsai’s tightrope walk as she balances the hopes and dreams of her nation between the colossal geopolitical forces of the U.S. and China.
Hope’s observational style captures Tsai at work in her country’s vibrant democracy at home, while seeking full international recognition of Taiwan’s right to exist. At a time when Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has demonstrated the ever-present threat of authoritarian aggression, Invisible Nation brings punctual focus to the struggle of Taiwan as it fights for autonomy and freedom from fear.

Happy #InternationalJazzDay! 🎶 We're thrilled to celebrate the incredible women and gender-expansive individuals in jazz within our New Music USA orbit. Last week we had the pleasure of welcoming seven emerging women and non-binary jazz musicians to our Next Jazz Legacy 2024 cohort!
In a recent interview with Forbes celebrating this new cohort, #NextJazzLegacy co-founder and Terri Lyne Carrington shared, "Women and non-binary jazz musicians have been marginalized groups in the [jazz] community, so our goal is to contribute to the collective work of changing that."
In that same interview, Next Jazz Legacy's co-founder and New Music USA CEO & President Vanessa Reed said, "At New Music USA we want to see an equitable ecosystem in jazz and other music genres, including film scoring, which would be enhanced if a broader range of voices was valued and nurtured."
Reed continues to spotlight other organizations doing good work to better level the playing field, including "the work of Jen Shyu and Sara Serpa and their Mutual Mentorship for Musicians - M³ program, which New Music USA has supported. Other initiatives we've been proud to support include El Paso Jazz Girls led by Amanda Ekery, and the Boulanger Initiative led by Laura Colgate, violinist and Leilani Joy. I'm impressed by the work of the Willie Mae Rock Camp led by LaFrae Sci."
