Our fonio beers have proved immensely popular since brewmaster began brewing with the grain in 2018, resonating with more communities and generating excitement with craft beer audiences.

We’ve loved seeing more breweries around the world adopt fonio this year through our Brewing For Impact initiative.

And now we’re excited to introduce you to our latest fonio beer, Fonio Rising Pale Ale. This hoppy pale ale is bursting with tropical, passionfruit flavor. Stop by our Tasting Room to enjoy it on tap or use our Beer Finder to find it near you.

And swipe to see us in the ’s fantastic article on the future of fonio in brewing.

09/04/2024

Cultivated for 5,000 years in the arid African Sahel, fonio requires no fertilizers, irrigation, pesticides, or other chemical inputs. Sown by smallholder farmers, it thrives in poor soil and can grow even if there is no rain for months.

Not only is fonio beneficial for the environment, but it’s also fantastic for brewing beer—producing a delicious array of fruity, tropical flavors often compared to Sauvignon Blanc wine and passionfruit.

Check out our Fonio Rising Pale Ale, now available to enjoy in our NYC Tasting Room and select stores.

Over the last year, we’ve asked breweries around the world to create a first-of-its-kind beer using fonio, an ancient African supergrain that is good for the planet, supports smallholder farmers in Africa, and has a promising role in the future of beer. Now, it’s our turn to brew a beer for our Brewing For Impact initiative.

Fonio Rising is a hoppy pale ale bursting with tropical and passionfruit flavors, and it’s now available in our Tasting Room and select stores this fall. Check out our beer finder to see where it will be released near you.

We’re thrilled to announce the release of our own fonio beer, Fonio Rising Pale Ale, coming next week. Stay tuned for more details!

Thank you to The and Courtney Iseman () for this fantastic piece on the innovative process of brewing with fonio, which is leading to unique beers that positively impact economic growth and sustainability in Africa.

“I am who I am because of my community. I appreciate their support in my moments of fear, like stepping into the ring the first time – but that fear never goes away. Every time I step into the ring with somebody new, I have to overcome that fear again and again. The reason that I’m able to do that is because of the strength I can pull from my boxing community and from my trans and q***r community. Any time I’m faced with fear that feels too big, I can just take a step back and think of how they see me and believe in me. That gives me the strength I need to believe, ‘I got this. I am scared, but I can do this.’ My community makes me brave.” - .belaineh, artist, athlete, and advocate

“It’s important within the q***r community that we have those intergenerational friendships where we’re both coming from a different perspective and viewpoint. In my case, being able to share q***r history with folks, and for them to be able to share with me what’s going on with a different generation, is an exchange that keeps progress going.”

Why A James Beard-Awarded Brewmaster Wants The Future Of Beer To Be An Ancient Grain 05/03/2024

“In some ways, Brewing For Impact is the most important work I’ve ever done.

If what we’ve started truly catches hold in the industry, we will hopefully start seeing the wider use of a grain that has no need for irrigation, fertilizers, pesticides, or other chemical inputs. It also supports soil regeneration while providing a vital source of income to smallholder farms, which are predominantly female-led – all while making some really fantastic beers. What more can you ask for?”

Brooklyn Brewery Brewmaster Garrett is celebrating his 30th anniversary with Brewing For Impact, a collaborative exploration with seven breweries around the world. Together, they’re spotlighting the ancient West African grain fonio and its untapped brewing potential.

Last week, we released the first beer with Senegalese brewery Maison Kalao. Read more about the full initiative in Forbes and mark your calendars for six more extraordinary fonio beers this year.

Welcome to , our final destination on Brewmaster ’s favorite bar tour of Brooklyn! “This is a place nearly lost to time, yet still real and untouched by kitsch. It’s a place we are very lucky to still have.” Armed with his go-to Brooklyn Lager in hand, Garrett thought back on his favorite memory at Sunny’s: “Taking friends visiting from England here and watching them spellbound by the Saturday night acoustic bluegrass jam. My brother Roger was also there that night, fell under Sunny’s spell, and now plays there with the bluegrass jam every Saturday.” Thanks for coming along on this bar crawl with us! Maybe you’ll spy Garrett at one of his favorite haunts soon 👀

Brewmaster ’s favorite bar tour of Brooklyn continues with a stop at ! Tucked away above the great 19th century NYC institution, .and.tollner, this nautical cocktail bar is “a dreamlike inner sanctum,” according to Garrett. After hopping behind the bar and making himself a Penicillin (his go-to drink at Sunken Harbour Club), he recalls his favorite memory, “Hosting a big birthday dinner downstairs in the restaurant with friends and family, then walking everyone upstairs to the bar, and declaring ‘Welcome to my stateroom.’” Only one stop remains on the tour–any guesses where we’ll end up?

Another pair of Brewmaster ’s wild experimentations-gone-right have emerged from the depths of our brewhouse with Facts On The Ground and Stand On The Word. These elusive cans blur the lines between beer and wine, a fusion of Belgian-style golden ale and the spectral essence of wine pomace. Unravel their otherworldly flavors now in the .

Facts On The Ground (9% ABV) is a Belgian-style strong golden ale infused with merlot pomace, with warm notes of baking spices and lush dark berries.

Stand On The Word (9% ABV) is a Belgian-style strong golden ale infused with chardonnay and sauvignon blanc pomace, with subtly tart fruit notes and a bright, vibrant finish.

Next stop on Brewmaster ’s favorite bar tour of Brooklyn: ! This spot is his so-called “meeting room”, and one of the first places he’ll take you when you visit. He comes for the “100% chill vibes” and stays for the great cocktails, like his go-to Rye Boulevardier (with a small Brooklyn Pilsner on the side). Garrett reminisced fondly on his favorite memory of Long Island Bar: “One night I was with a luminary of the cocktail scene, and then randomly more and more of our mutual friends showed up until we knew almost everyone in the bar. It wasn’t a planned get-together; we just all had the same idea at the same time.” Swipe to the end for Vintage Garrett ➡️
Any guesses where Garrett will take us next?

We asked Brewmaster to take us on a tour of Brooklyn to show us his favorite haunts! First stop: The Brooklyn Inn, his “home away from home” and one of the oldest bars in Brooklyn. His go-to drink here? Brooklyn Lager (of course!) or Guinness. When asked about his favorite memory at Brooklyn Inn, Garrett recalled, “going to the bar in slippers during a blizzard - because I could - and watching a foot of snow come down through the giant windows.” Stay tuned for more of Garrett’s beloved spots, and shout out your favorite bars in the comments.

🎂Happy Anniversary, Brooklyn Lager! 🍺

2023 marks the 35th Anniversary of Brooklyn Lager. A lot has changed since Steve Hindy and Tom Potter were hand labeling bottles, but the attitude - and the flavor - remains the same.

We’re planning a full year of parties, treats, and more to celebrate. The first festivities are coming up soon, so stay tuned this week for more details. P.S. Everyone’s invited 🍻

This Black History Month honors African Americans who have resisted historic and ongoing oppression, in all forms. Black q***r resistance is an essential part of this fight, fundamental to the LGBTQ+ rights movement and is too often erased.

Historic trailblazers like Marsha P. Johnson and Stormé
De Larverie catalyzed the modern q***r movement. Today, activists like Devin Michael Lowe, Kayla Gore and Kiara St James continue that work and we are proud to support them.

“No pride for some of us without liberation for all of us.” - Marsha P. Johnson, 1945-1992. Gay rights activist and drag queen.
