Sometimes, the dog run can be overwhelming for dogs. Learn the signals. If your dog is indeed worried about the dog run, maybe visit on low-traffic times and keep things short and sweet. You don't want to force your scared dog. Listen to your pup!

FYI

⚠️ The smoky haze from the Canadian wildfires has pet owners wondering how to protect their companion animals. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), if you're feeling the effects of the poor air quality, your pets are likely feeling it, too. The following precautions can help keep pets safe.

🏠 Keep pets indoors as much as possible.
🪟 Keep windows and doors shut.
⏱️ Take dogs outside only for quick relief walks; avoid intense outdoor activity.
🦜 Birds are especially vulnerable and should not be allowed outside.
🫁 Older animals, pets with heart or breathing conditions, and flat-faced (brachycephalic) breeds like pugs and bulldogs may be more affected.
🚨 Contact your veterinarian if your pet is coughing, gagging, or having trouble breathing.

FROM OUR FRIENDS AT Fort Tryon Park Trust:

Dear Fort Tryon Park Trust Members and Donors,

Nature is not a place to visit; it is home. And for the moment our home, for many years safely and ably parented by Executive Director Jennifer Hoppa, is in transition as Jennifer assumes her new and well-deserved role as Chief Strategy Officer for NYC Parks.

Every member and every donor matters. So, we ask you to continue to support the Fort Tryon Park Trust now, with your patience and understanding, as we navigate this transition. Although the process of change can be frustrating and uncomfortable at times, the rewards will be a more powerful, committed and engaged community. Donor and membership data is slowly being processed, and as a result the mailing of acknowledgments and membership cards is delayed. We are in the process of seeking administrative assistance to help us meet this backlog. And our thanks to you will be a 6-month extension on all FTPT memberships.

However difficult parting is, letting go can be a positive thing for the Trust, allowing us to make space for change and something new. But change is a collective endeavor, and as such, we call upon you, our community, to bear with us as we face the challenges of this transition.

With appreciation,
The Fort Tryon Park Trust Board

P.S. Please mark your calendars for June 17th- our community celebration of the new fountain in Fort Tryon's Anne Loftus Playground. The event will serve as our fond farewell event for Jennifer after 16+ years of dedicated service.

What's the Key to Polite Dog Play? - The Other End of the Leash 05/02/2023

Some good info from Patricia McConnell, Ph.D.

What's the Key to Polite Dog Play? - The Other End of the Leash Watching dogs play well together is one life’s greatest joys. One of my essential criteria when looking for a dog to replace Willie was whether he played well with Maggie. We tried two dogs out before we found Skip, neither of whom had any interest in playing with Maggie. Maggie ignored one, and h...

Update on Parks re: construction!
1) Select Pathway Reconstruction: sections of the Broadway side of the park are closed for upgrades through the end of the month, after which the contractor will move to the west side of the park. All work should be completed by the beginning of November.
2) Bennett Avenue Rockface Stabilization: Parking restrictions during construction are required to protect public safety given lifts and heavy machinery use.
3) Anne Loftus Playground: the grand fountain for all, new adult workout equipment, climbing structure and upgraded lighting are almost complete!

🥳🎉🥳🎉

Good news!!! New York City Councilmember Carmen De La Rosa (District 10) recognized the significant role Fort Tryon Park's Dog Run plays in the vitality and safety of the park and has allocated $300,000 in City Capital funding for it! She views this as a down payment toward the capital reconstruction of water service at the run.

We are hopeful that Manhattan Borough President Mark D. Levine also allocates City Capital funding for this important project, which with new perimeter fencing, is projected to cost over $1 Million. Fort Tryon Park Trust and dog lover advocacy have played an important role in helping us get this City Capital funding allocated, and will be instrumental in ensuring the park gets the full funding needed to start the project.

Please make sure to thank Council member Carmen De La Rosa and ask Borough President Levine to help provide the money to complete the large project.

Fort Tryon Park’s public restrooms have re-opened! We appreciate the patience of park users while NYC Parks makes repairs to a malfunctioning heating system in the historic 1930's concession building (formerly New Leaf Restaurant). The facilities are now open 8:00 a.m.-5:30 p.m. daily. For those wondering about the site's new concession operator, a public hearing was held by the City's Franchise Concession Review Committee for the Bonnefont as the new operator. Stay tuned for updates!
