Solar power solutions for education: Established in 1947, Tavuki District School caters to students from Year 1 to Year 8. Despite its longstanding presence, the school has relied solely on a generator for their electricity. To ensure uninterrupted operations, the school urgently needed an alternative power source. Here's where the GEF Small Grants Programme Low-Carbon Energy Access and Clean Cooking Energy strategic initiative comes in. Recognising that establishing solar energy as a backup solution would guarantee that both staff and students could carry out their duties without disruption, the Tavuki District School Solar Energy Project is powering their school with sunshine. On July 25, 2020, the oil tanker MV Wakashio, reported to be carrying nearly 4,000 metric tons of oil, ran aground on a coral reef on the island of Mauritius's southeast coast. After this catastrophic event, we partnered with Ocean Connect - an NGO, working to promote food security and strengthen the livelihoods of women whose incomes were negatively impacted by the oil spill. Aligned with the 2030 Agenda and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, the Native Oyster Aquaculture project also contributes to enhancing social inclusion, gender equality and women empowerment, food security and economic growth at community level.
