Today I honor Hinton Battle, my dear friend who left us to dance and sing in God’s Ensemble last night. 🥲🥲🥲 He fought this battle to live and be creative impacting audiences and young people across the globe. Let us always hold him high in our hearts and in our mind’s eye and forever speak his name🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO THPAC (TGAT) was originally introduced to the public as a work in progress in June of 2017 at the Mark O'Donnell Theater at The Actors Fund Arts Center in Downtown Brooklyn. In 2023 it was re-staged at Central Baptist Church located at 166 W. 92nd, NY, NY. in 2023. TGAT is a dance narrative. The subject matter is the sojourn of Black America from pre slavery, on through slavery, past Jim Crow and the ‘We Shall Overcome’ era, into the 60's with the black power rallying cry and onto Black Lives Matter movement of today. It was seen through the eyes of one woman's spiritual journey set in the Black church. The work was inspired by the life and times of Novella H. Smith, the mother of THPAC's Executive Chairman, Alex Smith, Jr. She also was major contributor to the music used in this production prior to her death in 2013. Unfortunately, she did not live to see this production. TGAT will be streaming free for a limited time until King Day 2024.
