Elektra is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of our long-time friend and honorary patron, Maestro Bramwell Tovey. Our many interactions with him in VSO concerts and performances of his “Songs of Envious Time” will be cherished memories for us. He will be remembered not only for his superb musicianship but for his enthusiasm for a thriving musical community. Rest well and thanks, Bramwell.

We’re thrilled to welcome the Sitka String Quartet as guest arists at our Lake of Stars concerts this weekend. The Quartet was formed by friends and colleagues in the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. After years of playing together in the larger ensemble, and sharing numerous concerts as chamber musicians within the VSO Chamber Players, it was a natural extension of their like-minded musical curiosity, open-heartedness, and a fearless willingness to explore quartet repertoire across many genres that propelled these four musicians to form a professional quartet. The members are: violinists Cassandra Bequary and Karen Gerbrecht, violist Emilie Grimes, and cellist Olivia Blander.

Lake of Stars – Elektra Women's Choir 05/05/2022

Our Lake of Stars concerts are coming up next weekend, and we're excited to tell you a bit more about one of three world premieres you'll hear us perform!

The title work, Lake of Stars, was composed by Argentina’s Santiago c. Veros on a text by Charles Anthony Silvestri. It is a dramatic, pandemic-inspired composition of hope through darkness, and is the result of a collaboration between the composer and choirs from Canada and the United States. Set for women’s choir, alto flute, string quartet, and bass, Lake of Stars is about challenge, transformation, and renewal.

In his prologue to the work, written in consultation with Veros, conductor Brian Stevens says: "Each day we are remade, transformed by experience and time, and begin a fresh journey with new dreams, ideas, and opportunity! The concept of transformation and renewal through light over a lake is akin to the grace of living".

A featured work in Elektra’s May 14 and 15 Lake of Stars concerts is Snewíyalh tl’a Stakw, which means “Teachings of the Water” in the Squamish language. The fruit of a collaborative project with First Nations for over two years, the work was conceived by Co-Curator and ethnomusicologist, Dr. Jeanette Gallant, who brought the idea of a musical exploration of water teachings and relationality in First Nations cultures to Elektra’s Artistic Director Morna Edmundson in 2019. Métis composer T Patrick Carrabre, director of the UBC School of Music and Chan Centre for the Performing Arts, was commissioned to write the musical score with text in the Squamish language chosen, gifted, and taught to Elektra by Rebecca Duncan.

The result is a five-movement work exploring relationality in the natural world, birth, ceremony, song, and identity. At its world premiere, local Squamish educator Candice Halls-Howcroft will introduce each movement with a brief explanation of its water teaching.
