#WomeninMusic: Jazz Guitar virtuoso Emily Remler was praised by Herb Ellis, calling her "the new superstar of guitar" and introduced her at the Concord Jazz Festival in 1978. When asked how she wanted to be remembered she said, "Good compositions, memorable guitar playing and my contributions as a woman in music...but the music is everything…” You’re watching a clip of Emily performing her composition "Blues For Herb", from the Vestapol DVD "Jazz Masters, Volume One." Check out her right hand technique and that walking bass line while chording! #WomensHistoryMonth #EmilyRemler #Jazz

Black Composers who changed the course of classical music: Known as the ‘King of Ragtime’, Scott Joplin was one of the most important and influential composers at the turn of the 20th century. His ideas around harmony, as well as his complex bass patterns and sporadic syncopation, are still imitated by composers today. One of his first and most popular pieces, the "Maple Leaf Rag", became ragtime's first and most influential hit. Ragtime lost popularity after Joplin’s death, but the music format evolved with other styles into stride, jazz, and eventually big band swing! #BlackHistoryMonth #MusicHistory #ScottJoplin
