4 Tips for Transitioning to the New Normal If You Are Immunocompromised
For those of you who still have to take COVID-19 precautions because you are immunocompromised or at risk, watching the freedom of others can be extremely challenging. Read on for tips on how to manage the transition: ✅ Communicate your needs. It's okay to let others know what you can and can't do, and that it is subject to change. It can feel like you are disappointing others, but the truth is that you are protecting yourself. ✅ Set expectations early on. It may be helpful to send a group email explaining what you currently feel comfortable with. This way, you have a document to reference, and you are not re-traumitized by repetitively having to say no, "feeling high maintenance," or feeling resentment for defending why you are taking precautions. ✅ Advocate for yourself. Don't be ashamed to advocate for yourself so that you can engage in everyday life while still taking precautions. Ask others to monitor chin strapping, to wear a mask, or to adhere to social distancing if you are feeling unsafe. You have the right to safety in public. ✅ Don’t give up. Try to spend time with vaccinated loved ones in safe, alternative ways when possible. #mentalhealthtips #immunocompromised #chronicillness #chronicillnesstherapist #zebrastrong #PrimaryImmunodeficiency #raredisease #invisibleillness #showyourstripes #geneticdisease #cbttherapist #rareisstrong #cbt #mentalhealthawareness

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. When we face hard situations that are beyond our control, it can be especially difficult to accept our reality. By repeating coping statements during these difficult moments, we can shift our focus to healthier ways of thinking and begin to move forward. This is all part of radical acceptance, which is "fully accepting our reality in situations beyond our control (source: Mental Health America’s 2021 Mental Health Month Toolkit)." Below are some examples of coping statements that can help during difficult moments: 1. I can’t change what has already happened. 2. I can accept things the way they are. 3. I can only control my own actions and reactions.
