Hello! I want to update you on our work with Oracabessa Foundation. Due to our fundraising efforts, the foundation is in the process of acquiring TEN new laptops and DEDICATED WIFI so we can begin teaching the first cohort of students from there in our Peer Teaching Program.

Most of our first group of instructors are former SummerTech campers who are currently in their internship with us. In this internship they observe and assist with our mentors. In a few weeks they will begin to work with their own students from Oracabessa Bay, Jamaica.

Hello SummerTech Community,

I’m excited to tell you about a new project and program that began last week between SummerTech and a small town on the island of Jamaica called Orecabessa Bay. Back in January I connected with The Goldeneye Foundation that provides community programming to their young people, among other things. They had just received a handful of 7” tablets for the children to use for educational purposes. I reached out to offer our help in providing free coding lessons to their young students.

As you know, one of SummerTech’s most beneficial efforts is that of raising students into leaders, mentors, and instructors. While not every SummerTech camper becomes a teacher, that opportunity is available to every single one through our leadership program. Last week, one of our youngest teachers began teaching a small group of students in Orecabessa Bay. The students are loving the classes but it quickly became clear to us how little technology they had and how much they needed basic classroom equipment.

Today we are beginning a fundraiser to help build them a classroom. Here is what we’re doing and how you can help.

SummerTech is donating 10 laptops that will be sent to the students in Jamaica in the second week of August. We will provide free coding lessons, taught by our amazing instructors - YOUR CHILDREN! These lessons will grow and evolve and continue, we hope, forever. We also intend to offer full scholarships so that some of their students can attend SummerTech in person.

First, however, is that the students need a proper classroom. Together we have created a list of items they need that include:
A smart TV
Desks
Chairs
Fans
Surge Protectors
A storage box

We are raising $2,500 so the Orecabessa Bay students can have a great learning experience with us. We hope you can make a donation. If we exceed our goal we will build an even better classroom.
