Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a chronic immune disorder that interferes with the body’s ability to fight infection and disease and if left untreated, can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), a more serious and life-threatening complication. Currently, antiretroviral therapy is used to treat HIV, but there is no cure for the virus. We recently reported on a 53-year-old patient achieving HIV remission through a stem cell transplant. Now, researchers from University Medicine Berlin have reported that a 60-year-old patient has been announced free of HIV following a stem cell transplant, making him the seventh-known patient announced free of the virus.#stemcell #dentistry #dentalstemcells #dentalpulpstemcells #stemcellbanking #medicine #science #stemsave #hiv #aids

Systemic lupus erythematosus, commonly known as lupus, is an autoimmune disease caused by the creation of autoantibodies, which attack the body’s cells and organs. When autoantibodies attack the kidneys, it can lead to lupus nephritis, a condition characterized by severe kidney dysfunction. Now, researchers from Chinese PLA General Hospital, led by Xiangmei Chen, are using mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) to treat lupus nephritis in a Phase I clinical trial. #stemcells #cells #clinicaltrial #lupus #stem #mesenchymalstemcell #autoimmunedisease #mscs #systemiclupuserythematosus #body #lupusnephritis #lupuserythematosus #cause #researchers #kidney #caused #systemiclupus #researcher #hospital #cell #generalhospital #stemcell #mesenchymalstemcells

Organoids are small, three-dimensional structures that mimic the structure and function of a specific organ or tissue. To make an organoid, researchers use stem cells and coax them down a particular pathway to differentiate into the organ or tissue of interest. The cells self-organize into the three-dimensional structure. So why are organoids useful in medicine? Because of their ability to mimic the exact structure and functionality of the body part, organoids are extremely useful as a first step in stem cell treatments and for drug discovery/testing. With organoids, researchers can develop tissue and organ regeneration protocols for transplantation. Organoids also provide a reliable and repeatable platform to test new drugs or drug regimens. Organoids will also accelerate the era of personalized medicine. Everybody is different - our bodies react to medicine differently. Researchers can take a patient’s stem cells and develop organoids to test how their body will react to a particular drug or drug regiment. #stemcell #dentistry #dentalstemcells #dentalpulpstemcells #stemcellbanking #medicine #science #stemsave

Did you know that stem cells can be used in combination with CRISPR to cure genetic disorders? CRISPR is a revolutionary gene-editing technology that acts like a pair of molecular scissors that allows researchers to snip out a mutated gene and replace it with the correct gene. Using the patient’s own stem cells, researchers correct the mutation inside the stem cell. Then, they take advantage of the stem cell’s ability to regenerate and grow the corrected cells in-vitro [outside the body] before reintroducing the cells back into the patient. #stemcell #dentistry #dentalstemcells #dentalpulpstemcells #stemcellbanking #medicine #science #stemsave #crispr #biotech

Stem cell transplants are a medical procedure that involves using stem cells to replace damaged cells with healthy, new ones. They are used to treat a variety of conditions, including cancers, organ and tissue replacement, and immune disorders. There are two types of stem cell transplants: autologous and allogeneic. In autologous stem cell procedures, the patient’s own stem cells are recovered, prepared, and transplanted back into the patient - say after chemotherapy or radiation treatment, for example. In allogeneic stem cell procedures, stem cells are collected from a donor and transplanted into a patient. Although both treatment options are promising, allogeneic stem cell transplants run the risk of cell rejection, in which the patient’s immune cells attack the ‘foreign’ donor cells and the lack of a suitable donor. At StemSave, we believe the best treatment option will be the patient’s OWN cells, as it removes the risk of rejection and the need for a donor. Once again, big names in media are playing catch up with StemSave. For years, we’ve been reporting on the stem cell biotechnology revolution including the use of stem cells in 3D bioprinting, such as bioprinting brains, blood vessels, and more. We suspect major publications are reading our blogs and following our social media to parse the likely impact of the latest advances in biotech. The Wall Street Journal recently reported on printing brains from stem cells, as highlighted in studies conducted by Oxford Unviersity and Univeristy of Wisconsin-Madison.#stem #stemcell #dental #dentistry #dentist #dentalstemcells #dentalpulpstemcells #stemcellbanking #medicine #med #regnerativemedicine #science #parenting #wisdomteeth #babyteeth #stemsave #brain #brainorganoid #bioprint

The central nervous system, composed of the brain and spinal cord, controls every motor, cognitive, and biological function within the human body. This system comprises three general layers - the forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain - which are formed during the initial stages of embryonic development. As we’ve reported in the past, organoids are three-dimensional structures that mimic the structure and function of a particular organ or tissue. Now, researchers from the University of Michigan and the University of Pennsylvania have developed a brain organoid from stem cells modeling these layers of the central nervous system. #stem #stemcell #dental #dentistry #dentist #dentalstemcells #dentalpulpstemcells #stemcellbanking #medicine #med #regnerativemedicine #science #parenting #wisdomteeth #babyteeth #stemsave #neurological #organoid

Huntington’s Disease (HD) is an inherited and incurable neurodegenerative disease that causes the degeneration of neurons in the brain. HD causes a variety of cognitive, motor, and behavioral symptoms. Last year, we reported on Cellavita’s phase II clinical trial for HD utilizing dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) as a treatment. Both Phase I and Phase II trials demonstrated improvement in patients’ motor scores and functional capacity. Now, with the success of Phase II, researchers have advanced to Phase III clinical trials.#stem #stemcell #dental #dentistry #dentist #dentalstemcells #dentalpulpstemcells #stemcellbanking #medicine #med #regnerativemedicine #science #parenting #wisdomteeth #babyteeth #stemsave #huntingtonsdisease #neurodegenerative #dementia

Cells, the biological building block of life, operate in an intricate and coordinated manner to maintain life in an organism. Each cell performs specific and general tasks, such as repairing damaged cells, regenerating new cells, and eradicating cancerous cells. Despite the intricacy of cellular processes, sometimes things go awry and a helping hand would be greatly beneficial. Now, in a novel use of stem cells, researchers from Tufts University and Harvard University have created “biobots”, multicellular clusters that assist in cellular processes.#stem #stemcell #dental #dentistry #dentist #dentalstemcells #dentalpulpstemcells #stemcellbanking #medicine #med #regnerativemedicine #science #parenting #wisdomteeth #babyteeth #stemsave #biobots #harvard
