Lab-grown diamonds have been increasing in quality and decreasing in price for several years. You can now buy a pair of exceptional quality lab-grown diamond studs for a small fraction of the price of earth-mined diamonds.
To be clear, lab-grown diamonds are actually diamonds, made of carbon, with the same hardness and sparkle as earth-mined diamonds (unlike imitations like CZ or Moissanite). They are also analyzed and graded by gemological labs and come with lab-grown diamond reports. Gemologists usually need sophisticated testing equipment to be able to differentiate lab-grown from earth-mined diamonds, and there is no difference whatsoever to the naked eye. This fancy brown “salt-and-pepper” shield cut diamond is set in 14k pink gold. The custom-designed piece was commissioned as a unique engagement ring.
I’ve been working with customers for over 25 years, creating one-of-a-kind pieces to complement their individual styles. It’s always a mutually gratifying experience.
One of the greatest pleasures of crafting custom-designed jewelry is being able to participate in the special milestones of people’s lives. This occasion was a college graduation for a particularly spirited soccer player, whose assertive style had earned her a fair share of yellow and red cards over the years. It had become an inside family joke, and for her graduation, her father commissioned this ruby “Red Card” pendant, with 24 diamond cut Burmese rubies of exceptional color and vibrancy, fashioned out of solid pink gold. He wanted it to be a proper piece of fine jewelry with hidden meaning, not a novelty item - so we added a diamond bail in white gold, and on the reverse is an engraving of a soccer ball, from “Your Biggest Fan, Dad”

This stunner of a ring is a redesign, containing a beautiful violet-gray rectangular cushion cut spinel. Ask gemologists what is the most under-appreciated gem by the general public, and spinel usually ranks near the top. Spinels come in a wide range of bright colors, they’re hard and durable, and they have a cubic crystal structure like diamonds - so they have fire and sparkle more than sapphires. All of this, and at a much lower price point than more popular gems. What’s not to love?
