Exciting news, my friends: Starting next week, I’ll be treating in my very own space on W 72nd street!

I’ve spent the last three years running my private practice out of @gothamcityacupuncture working alongside some incredibly talented folks. I’ve felt so fortunate to work in such a supportive atmosphere while I figured out what I wanted my practice to look like and where I wanted to go.

Given the work I’ve done in the past year and the great big things that are on the horizon, I decided the time was right to have my own space! Am I nervous? Yeah, absolutely! Scared? Completely! But I’m making the leap and I’m sure this next chapter will be fruitful!

#TechniqueTuesday post on port de bras! Remember last week when I showed you a video of the movements of the scapula? Here they are applied to port de bras!! As you move your arms a la second and up to fifth, your shoulder blades should simultaneously swing into upward rotation. To provide the arm bone (humerus) with a stable support. What I sometimes see (perhaps as a result of the cue ‘keep your neck long’ or ‘shoulders down and back!’) is that when the arms swing to second, the scapula depress and retract instead of swing upwards. Your shoulder blades should move quite a bit when you move your arm. Your scapula provide a base for the head of your arm bone. If your scapulae don’t move appropriately as your arm moves, you could have decreased recruitment of some the muscles that support your shoulder girdle like your rotator cuff, traps, and serratus anterior or decrease in boney sport which can decrease the stability of your shoulder. To those of you who had a positive lat mobility test (see yesterday’s post) here’s a good dynamic stretch for you! Kneel in front of a bench and place your elbows on top of it. Find a neutral spine position and then tuck your pelvis under (posterior pelvic tilt). Slowly sit back onto your heels while leaving your elbows on the bench. Careful not to extend your spine! You should feel a bit of a stretch under your armpits or along the length of your lats. **Please note: if this stretch causes you any discomfort, it may not be right for you.
