ANDES chocolate mints π« were started by ANDREW KANELOS, a Greek immigrant who traveled alone to the U.S. when he was 12 years old.
Andrew started his candy business in 1921 in Chicago, originally called Andy's Candy. But he soon realized men didn't like to give boxes of candy to their sweethearts with another guy's name, so he changed the name to the Andes Company after the mountains. In 1950, the "Crème de Menthe" (mint) was added to the chocolate and immediately became a success. Eventually, a small factory was built, and the business expanded into a chain of over 100 retail stores.
The iconic Andes Mints are a rectangular, thin chocolate bite that consists of three layers: two cocoa-based layers with green mint in the middle creating the perfect blend. The candies are usually wrapped in green foil and imprinted with the company's logo, the word Andes written amidst a drawing of snow-capped peaks.
After Andrew Kanelosβ death in 1959, his son George Andrew Kanelos took over the family business. He saw the company moving in a more mass-produced direction, decided to nix the neighborhood stores and relocate to Delavan, Wisconsin, where he opened a state-of-the-art factory. Andes Candies went from a chain of candy stores to a manufacturing giant across the nation creating one of the best-selling American chocolates of all time.
Moms would buy Andes Crème de Menthe Thins for dinner parties; hotels would leave them for their guests; husbands would buy them for their wives (and vice versa). In the United States, Andes mints are a popular after-dinner mint and are often distributed at restaurants. In fact, Olive Garden partnered with Andes in 1986 and still serves their after dinner mints in their 900 locations.
George Kanelos sold the business in 1980 to a Swiss candy company that later bought that bastion of holiday-related candy, Brachβs. In 2000, Brachβs sold Andes to Tootsie Roll Industries, which still manufactures the candies in Delavan, Wisconsin. πΊπΈπ«π¬π·

As we approach the 9/11 anniversary, we look back at the amazing history of the little Greek Church that got destroyed during the attacks on September 11, 2001.
Among the tall Manhattan skyscrapers was Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church βͺοΈ in the financial district of Manhattan, NY.
The building that came to house the church was built around 1832. It was originally a private dwelling which was later turned into a tavern. In 1916, Greek American π¬π·πΊπΈ immigrants started the congregation of St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. Before moving to Cedar Street, its parishioners worshiped in the dining room of a hotel on Morris Street run by Stamatis Kalamarides.
In 1919, five families raised $25,000 to buy the tavern and converted it into a church, and started to hold worship services in 1922. The church building was only 22 feet (6.7 m) wide, 56 feet (17 m) long, and 35 feet (11 m) tall and was easily dwarfed by the 110 story Twin Towers, which were completed in 1972 and 1973. Despite its small size and unusual location (all the adjacent buildings had been demolished, making the church surrounded on three sides by a parking lot), before the attacks the church had a dedicated congregation of about 70 families led by Father John Romas β¦οΈ.
On Wednesdays, the building was opened to the public and many people, including office workers from the towers and non-Greek Orthodox, would enter the quiet worship space for contemplation and prayer. π
The original St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church was located on 155 Cedar street in Manhattanβs financial district across the South Tower of the World Trade Center. The church was completely destroyed in the September 11, 2001 attacks when the South Tower collapsed. The new St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine is located on 130 Liberty Street and is less than 150 feet (50 yards) east of the church's original site, but more than three times larger.

September 1st is national GYRO (Yeero) Day!
A look back at the rise of Gyros in the USA πΊπΈ
The GYROS GIRL POSTER was very popular in the 70βs and 80βs, at a time when gyros (yeeros) rose to become Americaβs favorite Mediterranean meat π―.
The leader of making gyros a staple in the states was Kronos Food Corp based in Illinois. They were geniuses at marketing and advertising. Many restaurants, diners & delis from coast to coast displayed beautiful posters featuring a lovely American woman holding what at the time was mostly a foreign object β GYROS!

On Tuesday, August 27, we honor Saint FANOURIOS (Phanourios) the Martyr and Miracle Worker! β¨Ξ§ΟΟΞ½ΞΉΞ± Πολλάβ¨
St. Fanourios is one of the saints that we ask to intercede for us when we lose things. His name is from the Greek word βfaneronoβ which means I reveal. π
Saint Fanourios was unknown until the 14th century when his icon was found among ruins on the island of Rhodes, Greece π¬π·. The icon depicted the young Phanourios as a soldier, holding a candle. Around the border of the icon, twelves scenes depicted his martyrdom for Christ.
The faithful pray to Saint Fanourios to help them find lost objects, new jobs, health and happiness. Each year, he is honored by a symbolic cake (βPhanouropitaβ) baked in his name and blessed in the church βͺοΈ.

Saint KOSMAS the Aitolos (1714 to August, 24 1779). A Greek monk that was the most active and imposing figure of the modern Greek martyrology. His feast day is celebrated on August 24th, the date of his martyrdom π.
After studying at Mt Athos and in Constantinople, he returned and within the space of 20 years, he founded over 200 Greek Schools.
The patriotic Saint Cosmas of Aetolia fought for education, literacy, the Greek language and the faith. This is why he was also called a Nationalist, father of the Nation of Greece and Equal to the Apostles because he performed great work for his homeland Greece π¬π· and the teaching of the Gospel.
Northern Epirotes hold Agios Kosmas up as the Patron Saint of their persecuted region, their people and of their struggle. Agios Kosmas was officially proclaimed a Saint by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople in 1961. β¦οΈ
