Golden Oldies is wishing Jamaican singer Marcia Llyneth Griffiths a happy birthday today (born 23 November 1949). Known as the Empress of reggae. In a career spanning 40 years to date and still going strong, she hits high points internationally as a soloist and as a duo with Bob Andy, as Bob and Marcia. She has toured the world as a member of the I-threes with Bob Marley and the Wailers. Subsequently as a soloist she hit the Billboard chart with “Electric Boogie Song” and created a world class dance, the Electric Slide.

High school freshman Heman Bekele has won this year’s Young Scientist Challenge for creating a bar of soap that fights low-grade skin cancer. 🏆🧼⁠

Bekele's skin cancer-treating soap (SCTS) works by replenishing the skin with dendritic cells, which help protect the skin and fight cancer. ⁠

What started off as a fun science experiment after researching skin cancer turned into months of combining salicylic acid, glycolic acid and tretinoin to reach his end goal.⁠

“It was so difficult to get a bar of soap that didn’t just melt immediately,” Bekele said. “Persistence is a very important part of the scientific process.”⁠

Along with the prestigious title, Bekele received a $25,000 prize, which he wants to put towards securing a patent for his invention and college. //
