The Wolfe Club of Newburyport

The Wolfe Club is a social and charitable Mens organization aimed at doing good in our community.

James Wolfe - Historic UK 01/02/2024

Today, January 2nd, is Maj. Gen James Wolfe’s birthday. Our Members will raise a glass in his honor and to another great year for the Club.

Here is an excellent short read on General Wolfe and his life by Richard Eggington and asks the question:

“Suppose that before you were born, you were given a preview of what your life would be like; then given a choice – Mission Impossible style – of whether you wished to accept it.

Then suppose that this is what you were told:
“You will achieve immortality. Your name will echo down the generations as great a British hero. That’s the good news. The bad news is that you will die young, violently, far from home, after a life tainted by disappointment, rejection and heartache.”

What would you decide?”

James Wolfe - Historic UK General James Wolfe, arguably Britain’s most celebrated military hero of the 18th century, is best known for his victory over the French at Quebec in 1759...

Another great monthly meeting for December and back at the Museum of Old Newbury with a private tour by the Executive Director Bethany Groff Dorau.

We raised $1,050 from our members to support a “very special” Holiday mailing going out to members of the Museum for the annual fundraiser, and we encourage everyone to become members yourself and support the important preservation work being done here.

We even got an up close viewing of a bayonet retrieved from the area of General Wolfe’s passing at the battle of Quebec!

We are well under way planning the Second Annual Wolfe Club Ball being held Saturday February 10th, and tickets will soon be available….keep checking here as they will sell out fast.

Happy Holidays and we at the Wolfe Club wish you all a safe and happy season.

The Cocoa & Caroling event Friday night brought well over 100 people from the community together, cozily sheltered under a heated tent at Waterfront Park, to kick off the Holiday season and to celebrate the spirit of giving back.

The rain didn’t deter the crowd and the hot cocoa and cookies provided by Opportunity Works kept everyone warm. Tinkerhaus Community Makerspace ran an ornament decorating station for the kids and Gina McKeown conducted the Greater Newburyport Children's Chorus for a set of holiday classics and sing alongs with the Wolfe Club members and friends closing the night with Jingle Bell Rock.
The highlight of the night was a visit by Santa Claus, delivering a check for the $8,000 raised from the Turkey Classic Golf Tournament which was divided evenly across eight local charities supporting food security: Our Neighbors Table, Friends of Newburyport Youth Services, Newbury Food Pantry, The Veterans Legacy Initiative, The Salvation Army, Newburyport Massachusetts, St. Vincent DePaul, Among Friends, and The Pettengill House, Inc. Representatives of each organization were present to accept the donations directly from the members of the Wolfe Club.

Thank you to everyone who came out to enjoy the Holiday spirit and most importantly to recognize and support those organizations working to provide food security for those in need.

Thank you to our VP Greg Lewis and Phoebe Lonborg-Lewis for generously opening their beautiful home for our November meeting.

We enjoyed a great spread with libations including beer brewed by Michael Switzer and celebrated the success of the recent Oktoberfest and Turkey classic.

Great conversations and time to get to know each other better is always top priority. Till next we meet again.

The Turkey Classic Charity Golf Tournament had a stupendous 4th year and was a great time for all involved with the Wolfe Club at the helm for the first time.

The sold out tournament saw 144 golfers hit Apple Hill Golf Club to enjoy a great course, but mostly to have a ton of fun with contests, interactive elements and an atmosphere of camaraderie.

Congrats to the winners: Jason Burnham, Geoff Burnham, Brady Dow, and Rich Abruzzese.

They were presented the coveted orange jackets for their unbelievable 19 under team finish.

Also well done to our Highest Scorers: Anthony Santana, Carlos Ruiz, Scott Good, Mike Weaning. They got Turkey hats and free group lessons at Black Swan!

Huge congratulations for event founder, champion, and director -New Member, Matthew Blanchette for the many hats he wore and for making it all happen. Brittany Gurrisi was right there to keep everything on course from planning to day of and member Matthew Sweet was a huge help getting the Club and sponsors organized around the event.

Markus Pesce - L&S Digital Media, and new Club member, single handedly ran the TkTv live stream highlighting all of our important sponsors, worthy charities, highlights of the Wolfe Club, Tournament action and attempted to rein in our live commentators, Comedian Mike Koutrobis, our President Michael Switzer, and field team comedy duo of Justin Hoff & Shawn Ruiz (Mystaru).

Too many people to name helped throughout so thank you all for making this such a success!

Metzy's Taqueria - Food Truck was on site serving up burritos, Cider Hill Farm ~ Amesbury provided donuts and the swag and “special” beverages were plentiful!

We are excited to announce that we raised over $9,000 which will be evenly divided among our outstanding charitable organizations providing Food security for our community.

Better yet, the checks will be hand delivered at our Cocoa and Caroling event at Waterfront Park on December 1st. We’ll be gathering under a HEATED tent from 6-8 singing Christmas Carols with the Greater Newburyport Children's Chorus. Opportunity Works will be handing out hot cocoa and cookies, and Tinkerhaus Community Makerspace will have a workshop for children to make Christmas Ornaments. Santa has dropped in every year circa 7pm to hand deliver a check for all of the money raised by the Turkey Classic to the 8 non profits and take a few Christmas wish lists from the boys and girls of Newburyport as well!

Great opportunity this morning to deliver the $800.00 raised from the Newbury Town Day Grilling Fundraiser to support the important work being done at the Newbury Food Pantry to provide food security for our community.

Jane Merrow, Director, gave us a full tour of the operation and it is incredible how efficiently they are delivering food to so many, while eliminating waste and promoting sustainability with an All Volunteer group.

New Member Rich Lyman has been donating his time for years and will act as a Liason to coordinate our own volunteers to help going forward.

We look forward to contributing more financially through the Turkey Classic Charity Golf Tournament and through hands on volunteering from our members.
