Our second Film Spotlight takes us all the way to Ireland in "Fair Seas: The Atlantic Northwest" Life along the northwest Irish coastline is constantly moved and shaped by the wild green waves rolling in from the Atlantic Ocean. Below the waves, the life and color of the underwater world await. By exploring these hidden gems of Ireland, the wildlife and seascapes hidden beneath the surface, and how these waters are now at risk, this film explores the stunning Irish coastline through the eyes of those who know it best. Voices from local coastal communities explore their close connection to the ocean, sharing their stories, hopes, and fears, and how marine protections offer new hope for a brighter future for our natural world. Made by Swimming Head Productions Directed by Dr. Tasha Phillips, an early-career director, specializing in short, documentary films. After beginning her career as a marine scientist, her transition into film came through a passion for the communication of complex issues through engaging storytelling. She is a National Geographic Explorer and draws on her endless curiosity and a forensic eye for detail to direct documentaries exploring fascinating topics from new scientific discoveries to personal stories, aiming to engage people with the natural world. Welcome to our very first BBFF 2024 film spotlight! "The Ocean's Greatest Feast" is a fantastic film that will take your breath away. Every winter South Africa’s east coast sees billions of sardines converge in the biggest biomass migration on the planet. As they move up the coast, this 4-mile-long shoal faces a range of predators from seals in an ancient colony, to Cape gannets launching aerial attacks, and hundreds of hungry sharks that corral the sardines into bait balls. A super pod of dolphins arrives, and the sardine numbers are decimated. Everything favors the predators until the orcas come. This film will be in Block B: Curious Creatures. Don't miss it! For the winner of the Big Blue Film Fest “Most Inspirational” Award, we have “Reclaim Your Water: Natasha Smith” Directed by Faith Briggs There’s nothing quite like the feeling of riding a wave. Passionate about sharing that feeling, Natasha Smith and Ebony Beach Club invite more people to the water to increase inclusivity in surfing. Natasha didn’t grow up believing that “Black people don’t do that,” was going to be a limiting factor in her life. Not only does she ride dirtbikes, skate, and surf, she is passionate about sharing those skills with others. Along with her friends at Ebony Beach Club, Natasha is reclaiming waves, introducing others to the ocean, and spreading a love of surfing through her community. Her joy is palpable on each wave and whether it's dipping toes into the water, dancing in the waves, or getting on a board, EBC is creating an inclusive space on the beaches of Los Angeles that is making waves in their community. Made in partnership with Claima Stories and Sperry, “Reclaim Your Water” is a three-part short documentary series that poignantly highlights how communities of color can reclaim water as a healing and enjoyable experience for all. Come learn about the fantastic creature known as the Horseshoe Crab in our next film spotlight! “Horseshoe Crabs: How 350-Million-Year-Old Sea Creatures are Vital to Human Survival” With the worldwide race to develop and manufacture vaccines came a renewed interest in horseshoe crabs. These sea creatures are over 350 million years old and their blue blood has been critical to the development of COVID-19 vaccines. Their epicenter is here in the northeast and they descend on our beaches every spring in the thousands. Although the bright blue blood played a vital role in helping to end the pandemic, their numbers are in decline. We spoke with some "local heroes" who have been protecting them and went out into the waters of Brooklyn with elementary students to monitor and tag them. Numerous species, including humans, depend on horseshoe crabs and it's up to us to help ensure their survival. Sarah Porter: The film is hosted by Sarah Porter, a passionate environmentalist and former New Yorker whose work rescuing unwanted hermit crabs has been featured in USAToday, Upworthy, PIX11 News, amNY, and The Dodo. Sarah runs the advocacy platform, Two Claws Up, dedicated to providing resources on how to properly care for crabs as pets. Additionally, she focuses on helping nonprofits use virtual reality (VR) for storytelling and raising awareness about their work. Sarah is a former Peace Corps volunteer and the founder of the New York City Peace Corps Association. Andrea Kramar: Andrea Kramar is a video journalist with eight years of experience spanning tv and digital. She currently shoots, produces, scripts, and edits digital video stories for USA TODAY and previously worked for CNBC and ABC News. She loves exploring the world around her and transforming her curiosity into multimedia stories. Social Media: Two Claws Up on Instagram and YouTube @twoclawsup
