Wellness For Trauma Survivors
Providing information, resources and inspiration for trauma survivors experiencing PTSD, anxiety and I understand the challenges we face!
I'm a Trauma Survivor who faced challenges in losing weight, sleeping, treating myself right, calming myself from hypervigilance and reducing stress. My hope is to make your wellness journey easier and have the inclusion of these three areas make a positive impact on your life! I have been in the fitness and wellness field for over 20 years. I hold the National Strength and Conditioning Associati

Taking a short walk after a meal has been shown to lower your blood sugar levels. Try 5 min a day to get started!
Taking a walk after eating can help with blood sugar control When I had my annual checkup last fall, the blood test showed I am close to having prediabetes. My doctor said I need to change my diet and get more exercise. I recently read that taking a walk right after eating helps lower blood sugar. Do you know if that's true?
WHAT WELLNESS CONTENT TOPICS DO YOU WANT TO SEE POSTED?
(breathwork, movement, articles...what will help you?)
For a good part of my life, fear, anxiety, thoughts of not being good enough held me back from taking risks. I recently took a huge risk and left my job of 17 years to start a new career.ļæ¼ I donāt know where my new path will lead me but I am proud of myself for getting to the point in my life where I wasļæ¼ able to take a risk. It says so much about how far Iāve come in my healing.
Wishing you a day filled with serenity and peace
It's been over a year since I've posted due to suffering a bad concussion that sidelined me for 8 months and I'm still feeling the effects. When I opened this page for the first time I felt a comfort to be surrounded once again by people who share the understanding of what it's like to be a trauma survivor. I now have survived 2 traumas and have learned so much from both. I'm looking forward to sharing and getting back to it soon!

I feel as if this is a mantra I need to repeat to myself every morning.

You have the fortitude to survive
4 seconds inhale, 4 second hold, 8 seconds exhale all through the nose to reduce symptoms of stress.
I tend to jump into action without taking a breath. Iām now trying to take the time to slow down and not let my anxiety drive me. Do you react the same way? What are you doing to slow yourself down? Iām using the four by four breath method with good results. 4 seconds to breathe in, 4 second hold, 4 seconds to exhale
Vagus nerve exercise to alleviate anxiety.
1. Sit in a chair šŖ 2. Place your right hand on your head and gently bring your right ear to your right shoulder. 3. Shift your eyes up and to the left. 4. Hold for 30 seconds. 5. Repeat on the other side. Why this works? Anxiety is an emotion this exercise releases stress and tension from the nervous system and sends a signal of safety to the brain.
When I first was diagnosed with PTSD and started therapy, I was told I should meditate. I tried over and over again, I couldn't get past a minute. So, I gave up! It was years before I tried again. I didn't understand the importance and how much of a difference it could make for my anxiety. Studies show after 8 weeks of being on a meditation program, the amygdala (where our flight/fight is housed) shrinks. The result is less symptoms of anxiety. That knowledge fueled me not to give up. Now, it's part of my daily practice. It takes work but you can get there.
Last week I was given the honor to present to the Women's Alliance Group at Equinox. To speak on the effects of PTSD and how it impacted me in the workplace. I remember the days when trauma kept me from having a voice. How it felt in the workplace where no one understood.
Now that I have my voice, it's my mission to raise awareness in the workplace, support and empower those who are on their journey, speak for those who haven't found their voice. As May comes to a close, mental awareness shouldn't cease but continue on.
I'm keeping up the fight for removing the stigma. I C.A.N SURVIVE TRAUMA

Yesterday, I presented my journey through PTSD while trying to hold down a fulltime job at the same time! I'm humbled by the support of the Women's Alliance Group at Equinox for giving Trauma Survivors a safe place to gather in the workplace.

Iām proud that when I approached Equinox about starting a Trauma Support group they immediately gave me the go ahead. We have all the tools and support to evolve. We are at our infancy of the impact we will make in raising awareness but Iām excited to be a part of making a difference one day at a time
