💪🏽 At Home ‘Prehab’ Work We hear it all the time: “my knees hurt”, “my hips hurt”, “my ankle hurts”. Athletes are suffering from overuse injuries now more than year past, and here are 5 reasons to think Why: 1.) Did you already choose a main sport? 2.) Do you train > 8 months a year within the same sport? 3.) Have you quit other sports to “focus” on one sport? Those three questions were asked to classify youth athletes into a low, moderate, or high degree of sport specialization. 4.) How many hours a week are you participating in one organized team sport? 5.) Is that number greater than your age? Those five questions helped a 2015 study of >1100 youth athletes (age 11-15), identify a relationship between hours of high sport specialization and age. Injured athletes had 1.55x the odds of completing more hours in organized sport than non-injured athletes. Athletes that developed serious overuse injuries had 2x the odds of completing more organized sport hours than their age (Jayanthi et.al 2015). Simply put if you are a 12 years old soccer athlete and exceed 12 hours a week of soccer specific training you may be at a greater risk of an overuse injury. You can still train to develop the physical qualities required in your sport but in a diverse method to reduce the likelihood of overuse injuries. This video is a great tool to help alleviate some lower body nagging injuries. Great job by these young athletes learning better movement patterns to help better their game. Progressing the from the first video, to videos 2 & 3. The intent was to teach the knee drive during the first 5 yards of the movement, then bring it all together for the final drill.
