NICHD'S Safe to Sleep #ClearTheCrib Challenge
You wouldn’t put a kayak in your bed. So why are there pillows, toys, and blankets in your baby’s sleep space? Keep baby’s sleep area clear of items and objects—no blankets, pillows, bumpers, or toys. All baby needs is a fitted sheet covering the mattress. This Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Awareness Month, take the #ClearTheCrib Challenge to practice creating a safe sleep space for baby. Record your effort and share it on social media with the hashtag #ClearTheCrib. https://go.nih.gov/6d6poOJ #SIDSAwarenessMonth #SafeToSleep

Non-fitted and loose items, even if they are lightweight or tucked in, can increase baby’s risk of sleep-related death, such as from suffocation. Remove everything from baby’s sleep area except a fitted sheet covering the mattress. Dressing baby in a wearable blanket—one that secures to baby with sleeves or armholes—adds a layer of warmth without adding items to the sleep area.

Overheating increases baby’s risk for sleep-related death. Watch for signs that baby is too hot, like sweating, clammy or flushed skin, and being hot to the touch. If you see these signs, act quickly to cool baby off by removing a layer of their clothing or moving them to a cooler room. ✨ When baby's in the crib, other things are out! ✨ Help baby stay safe during sleep by keeping bedding, toys, and other items out of baby’s sleep area. By following the evidence-based recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics Task Force on Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), everyone who cares for baby can help reduce baby’s risk of SIDS and other sleep-related death. Share this reel and encourage others to prioritize safe sleep practices for baby.
