Part one of the History of Mullen’s Folly
Here is part one of the History of Mullen’s Folly. All of the same images and text from my talk I gave last week “Restoring Mullen’s Folly”. The livestream audio was terrible, so I will be re-recording it this way in multiple parts that way it can be posted to both Instagram and Facebook. Stay tuned for part two later this week!

Test run for Thursdays lecture.

Today I’m cleaning several fragments of late 19th and early 20th century linoleum floor coverings. They were preserved under a linoleum floor put down in the west bedroom upstairs in the 1930s or 40s. I have a few small pieces of this particular pattern in two different color schemes. I believe this piece dates to the 1880s or 1890s. #cecilcountymd #maryland #homerestoration #history #historichomes #19thcentury #mullensfollyrestoration #nineteenthcentury #antique #linoleum #linoleumrug

How did I miss this sitting right on the surface under the porch for so long??? It was right next to one of the old porch foundation walls, ans has mortar on it from when it was used during repairs. This is a piece to a small cobalt decorated stoneware bowl or milk pan. Another piece has a 1 gallon capacity stamp on it. Probably produced in Baltimore, Maryland in the second quarter of the 19th century. #cecilcountymd #maryland #homerestoration #history #historichomes #19thcentury #mullensfollyrestoration #nineteenthcentury #18thcentury #eighteenthcentury #antique #archaeology #bottledigging #relichunting

Decided to do the viral ghost trend with my boy Blue. It was a strugle, but nothing a little patience and a dinner roll can’t handle. #viraldogtrends #dogphotoshoot #cecilcountymd #maryland #homerestoration #history #historichomes #19thcentury #mullensfollyrestoration #nineteenthcentury #18thcentury #eighteenthcentury #silverlab #silverlabsoftiktok

A nice big piece pulled up yesterday. A side to what is most likely a big cup or mug, and might end up being a mustache cup. Dating from around 1880-1895 #cecilcountymd #maryland #homerestoration #history #historichomes #19thcentury #mullensfollyrestoration #nineteenthcentury #antique #archaeology #bottledigging #relichunting

Sitting on the porch this mornjng while taking a break. I always look down to see what I can find, since I’ve found 18th century buttons, pipe stems, and pieces of pottery. Today was a 1925 wheat penny!#cecilcountymd #maryland #homerestoration #history #historichomes #19thcentury #mullensfollyrestoration #nineteenthcentury #18thcentury #eighteenthcentury #antique #archaeology #bottledigging #relichunting #wheatpenny #oldcoins

Things that every 18th century house next to the cemetery needs? Right? #cecilcountymd #maryland #homerestoration #history #historichomes #19thcentury #mullensfollyrestoration #nineteenthcentury #18thcentury #eighteenthcentury

Finally decided to see if this fireplace crane would fit into either of the fireplaces in the house. It was laying lose on the floor inside, so I took it home for safe keeping before I emptied the house out. Its a standard piece of ironwork found in houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. It just so happens to fit into one fireplace added in the mid to late 1820s or possibly the early 1830s! #cecilcountymd #maryland #homerestoration #history #historichomes #19thcentury #mullensfollyrestoration #nineteenthcentury #18thcentury #antique #eighteenthcentury

Working in the trash midden located under the side porch today. Found a nice large piece of an early 19th century slip decorated redware plate! #cecilcountymd #maryland #homerestoration #history #historichomes #19thcentury #mullensfollyrestoration #nineteenthcentury #archaeology #18thcentury #pottery #antique #eighteenthcentury #ceramics #bottledigging #relichunting

While pulling up some lineolum flooring I discovered pieces of earlier linoleums! A couple are pieces to linoleum rugs from the early 20th century, I think one piece might even be late 19th century! Adding them to the house’s archive!#linoleum #linoleumfloor #early1900s #late1800s #turnofthecentury #victorian #cecilcountymd #maryland #homerestoration #history #historichomes #19thcentury #mullensfollyrestoration #nineteenthcentury

Whats that hiding way under my porch??? I saw what looked like a piece of pottery while laying on my stomach pulling english ivy out today. Low and behold, its a piece to an early 19th century pearware lid! Likely off of a sugar bowl, or possibly a teapot. #archaeology #cecilcountymd #maryland #18thcentury #homerestoration #history #historichomes #19thcentury #pottery #antique #mullensfollyrestoration #nineteenthcentury #eighteenthcentury #ceramics

Here is another piece completed from the trash midden in the crawlspace! One of a set of 6 saucers and at least 4 maybe 5 matching tea bowls in the Woodman pattern. Dating to around 1820. The well known variation of this pattern was produced by Spode. Inspired by an engraving published by Francis Eginton in 1807. This varies slightly from the spode pattern, so its hard to tell which of the many Staffordshire potteries made this particular set. #archaeology #cecilcountymd #maryland #18thcentury #homerestoration #history #historichomes #19thcentury #pottery #antique #mullensfollvrestoration #nineteenthcentury #eighteenthcentury #ceramics #fyp #bottledigging

Always a great feeling to find such an attractive pattern on a piece of redware! Today we discovered a trash midden under the side porch. This was the best piece recovered today. Probably dating to the first decades of the 19th century, and most likely produced somewhat locally. #archaeology #cecilcountymd #maryland #18thcentury #homerestoration #history #historichomes #19thcentury #pottery #antique #mullensfollyrestoration #nineteenthcentury #eighteenthcentury #ceramics #fyp #bottledigging

This tea bowl from the crawlspace is coming together nicely. Made in England in the 1820s or possibly the 1830s. It is just missing a few small pieces! I hope that I find the rest! There is one other matching cup along with two saucers. Check out mullens_folly_restoration on instagram to see more of the many exciting finds! I know the video needs a little tlc, but it’s my first attempt at putting different clips together to make a video like this. #archaeology #cecilcountymd #maryland #18thcentury #homerestoration #history #historichomes #19thcentury #pottery #antique #mullensfollyrestoration #nineteenthcentury #eighteenthcentury #ceramics

Having all of the trees that are “dangerous” removed today. Helping insure that there is no damage to the house in any future storms from a tree falling.

Finally back to working on the house! Nice portion of an early 19th century English pearlware tea bowl. Possibly goes to another one I have started reassembling already. I think there are two cups and two saucers in this pattern so far!
