An atlas subluxation, a misalignment of the top cervical vertebra (C1), can arise from various factors. Traumatic birth experiences, where the infant's neck is subjected to excessive force or if interventions occurred ( such as induced labor, breaking waters, ptocin, an epidural, the use of forceps/ vacuum and a Cesarean Delivery) can lead to subluxation. Additionally, poor maternal posture during pregnancy and birth, prolonged labor, or the use of extraction tools during delivery might contribute. Even minor falls or jolts post-birth can cause misalignment. Incorrect sleeping positions, extended periods in car seats, or baby carriers can also strain the delicate neck. These factors combined can result in an atlas subluxation, disrupting nerve signals that innervate the cheek, tongue and neck that are important for feeding. If left unaddressed, the atlas subluxation can potentially lead to other symptoms in the infant's overall development, feeding, digestion, sleep and movement.
