FROM THE FIELD FRIDAY

THERE'S A BETTER WAY TO DO THINGS.

I received a call from a Marine Corps brother of mine that his garage door wasn't opening far enough to fit his new truck in the garage.

"Not a problem" I said, "probably a simple adjustment".

His response told everything, "weeeellllllll, maybe you come out and take a peak".

I knew I was in trouble.

Upon arrival, I saw the problem immediately.

The trolley that connects the arm between the operator and garage door is hitting the structural support beam of the house.

How is that possible ask?

Who ever installed the operator last cut a hole through the support beam and slid the operator through.

I'm pretty sure that is against code of some type but, I'm no home inspector.

Anyway, there are other options such as a LiftMaster,/Genie sidemount or Sommer EVO so you don't have to destroy the structural integrity of your how for a matter of convenience.

If you would like a consultation on those "options" that I spoke of, don't hesitate to reach out.

The Emergency release cord on your garage door operator is for your safety but, can be a security risk as well.

In my travels today I got a call friend referral out in Dallas. He told me that his garage got broken into last night.

I asked, "what makes you think that someone actually tried to break into your garage?"

He replied with "there's a big bend on top of my door and my car was stolen". So it seems like a legit claim.

When I arrived, CSI was there taking a report and the homeowner showed me where the thieves stuck up pry bar between the door and the header, bent the top section back, and hooked The emergency release with a hanger.

They opened up the garage door, actually went into the house, took the keys to the car, and drove away.

Now, I'm not saying for you to cut off your emergency cord because it is for your safety but, do you take off the plastic handle so it cannot be hooked with a hanger.

I reinforced the door with a strut and operator reinforcement bracket. I also wiped the old garage door opener codes and reprogrammed new remote.

My Work Here Is DONE!

I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THE FINISHED PRODUCT.

I've been waiting to post this for about two months; when my part was complete.

I can't wait to see the finished product at the beginning of 2021.

A Marine Corps brother of mine shot me a message (at the end of July) that he was wanting to do something different with his shop.

We ran some ideas back and forth coming up with a 20x12 shop door w/2' of highlift in the front for all of his toys and a 5x3 full view bar top door for the back leading to the pool.

He shot me a message asking if I had a foundation person because his guy was to busy (Sept 3rd).

I put a message out to my network and Hugo Hernandez responded instantly. I connected Hugo and Gunner Reeder and the ball was rolling.

This is what I didn't know. Gunner was going to build the shop himself and all of the cool framing on the inside (we'll get to that at the end of the post).

October 9th rolled around and the shop was up.
SITE CHECK TIME!!!

12' high with 2' of high lift was a "no go" because I didn't know and he didn't realize the pitch on the right and left sides.

NO highlift and spec change to 20x10, which is still awesome but, not as epic. I digress.

I was somewhat concerned if the bolts that hold the frame together were going to be strong enough to support the weight of the door.

There was no steel beams or C channel in this building so basically, as I opened it, I was praying.

Every sound I heard made me think this big Mf'er was coming down but, apparently Canadians know how to engineer a building (Kyle Hart)

Pics show the progress of the framing.

Today we finished up the final piece, the full view.

An OSHA manual burst in to flames somewhere with this one but, that's a story for another day.

Now, imagine this, he is going to build a second floor living area and cabinets around the springline.

This "shop" is the most perfect discreption of a mullet ever, "business up front, party in the back".

IT'S USUALLY A LAW FOR A REASON.

A devil doc shot me a message looking for a door estimate but, also let me know that his daughter had a broken spring on her garage door.

Not a problem, we did the estimate and then I found this little gem at the daughter's house.

He proceeded to tell me that the motor has been like that scent is Uncle installed it back in 2000.

Sadly the law has been in effect since 1991 and his uncle actually worked for a legitimate garage door company.

What's worse about this particular situation is the homeowner gave his daughter the house and she has five little kids.

Now just imagine she's leaving for work, close the garage door, and one of her kids comes running out to say goodbye. There's no sensors to make that door reverse backup and the kid gets crushed.

My home inspectors Julian Cofer and Brian Lawson fail homes for this all the time.

I understand the level of convenience but, convenience can be deadly.

One of the BIGGEST concepts to is:

IT'S BETTER TO GIVE THAN RECEIVE

Back on the night of August 29th the wind started picking up pretty bad out of nowhere.

Some of you may remember me posting pictures of a large tree limb that snapped and fell in my back yard.

Well apparently it was a mini tornado called a down burst that ripped through Briar/Azle.

Many homes were damaged and/or destroyed during the storm.

A buddy of mine Jason Krystal Malewiski runs a non profit called Servolution and there goal is to give back to the community and those in need with home services.

Jason shot me a message to see if I could help out a disabled veteran homeowner that had their garage door snatched out of the opening.

Well, sometimes you gotta give back to not only the community but, to my fellow veterans.

The Cold Outside Is Frightful.....

So how does an dog owner combat this weather?

Calm down you Montana people, 30° is cold in Texas.

I came home today after searching for my new marketing truck. I didn't find it but, the search continues.

My wife said "what's the temperature going to be this WEEK" ? I replied with, "cold AF".

She replied with "maybe we should have the dog stay inside" . I replied with "f*** that s***".

So, I did what a garage door guy does and I took the vinyl back insulation out of the garage door that I happen to have on top of my truck and I built an igloo for my dogs.

Then of course I dressed it up with some blackout curtains and I couldn't forget my EGA.

I hope you all are having a productive Sunday.

THURSDAY RIDDLE FOR YOU.

Who has two thumbs and was just accepted as the go to garage door supplier for one of the largest roofing companies in DFW?

That's right, this guy.

Right around a month ago, I heard of an event going on in Dallas where are some of the biggest home service sales companies we're meeting up to talk shop and talk growth.

I definitely didn't fit the mold but, I was extremely persistent in wanting to attend.

Mike Claudio did his damnedest to get me in but, my company wasn't at the level that it needed to be for me to attend in person.

Jon Paramore graciously allowed me to join via Facebook video.

While the sales summit was happening I noticed that it was a room full of roofers.

I paid close attention to the big dude in blue Tony Taveras and all he said about his company Linear Roofing & General Contractors.

I definitely knew that I wanted to join their team.

I sent a message through Facebook to the gentleman that was recording the live to lean over and ask Tony if he was looking for the garage door guy that was reliable.

He instantly sent back Tony's information and told me to friend request him.

I sent a couple messages to Tony after he accepted my friend request with no response.

I've instituted what I learned from Mike and started commenting and liking all of Tonys posts. That gave me the in 2 slide into his DM's one more time.

We set up a meeting today but, Tony unfortunately couldn't be there because he was doing what roofers do and selling a roof.

So, Tom Drake saw me standing in the doorway waiting and decided to do the interview with me.

I think he was rather Blown Away by the fact that I actually have a process when dealing with Roofing clients by possibly increasing their curb appeal.

We chopped it up for a little bit and sealed the deal, and of course we couldn't leave without doing what Linear does and taking a selfie.

I don't know about you but, 2020 I've been pretty awesome.

Let's be honest, you most likely have never taken a second thought about your garage door being blown off in a storm, RIGHT?

The damage was severe

The owner's reaction was shocking

Another Iconic Transformation

The Slover's called me out to the gorgeous little but, growing town of Celina Texas on a recommendation of a Marine brother of mine back in mid August.

As I pull in to the neighborhood I notice new construction homes going up on the right side of the street.

As I make a left into the neighborhood, I instantly notice warn out and damaged "cedar" garage doors.

I pull up to the home and I see what is in picture number one.

Panels lifted or missing completely.

I turn around and start to scan the neighborhood and notice that the majority of the garage doors are having the same issue.

BUT....

These are not true cedar doors or even a quality overlay but, particle board glued 1/8" sheet.

I do my introduction, talk about options, color samples, and design then, I address the elephant in the room.... "so, how old is your home?" They respond with "5 yrs".

My jaw drops but, I must keep my composure through the horror of what I heard.

A $500k home w/ these issues 5 years in, RIDICULOUS.

I also noticed that they had higher ceilings where we could do a high lift with side mount jackshaft. They declined for the time being.

They later told me that the builder got ran off but, the damage has been done.

We got the approval from the HOA and also, they decided to put in a lift system for the canapy of their jeep so, they want to move on the side mount.

Now, remember I said that this was in August. It's December 1st tomorrow.

After a month of waiting for the HOA approval, I put the order in for Accent series urathane injected flush panel doors.

Of course, the "Rona" has had an affect on manufacturing across all industries.

So, here we are 12 weeks later, just in time for the cold to roll through and the carollars to belt out their rendition of masked "silent night".

Good things come to those who (are so very patient, awesome, and understanding during these crazy times) wait.

In June of 1999, I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps with the fullest of intentions of getting out of the military and becoming a police officer.

I decided that my MOS should be something that I can fall back on if law enforcement didn't work out so, I signed up to be a jet engine mechanic.

After surviving Marine Corps boot camp and Marine combat training I got orders to Pensacola Florida to begin training on jet engines.

To my surprise jet engine mechanic school was full and the needs of the Marine Corps put me in as a structural mechanic.

When I got orders to Virginia we were offered a wish list of where we wanted to go. We had a choice of East Coast, West Coast, or Japan.

Being that I was from California, I decided to go to Japan first and East Coast second.

Needs of the Marine Corps sent me to San Diego.

On the first day checking into the fleet I was told that I will be working in tire shop for only 6 months only to find out that the needs of the Marine Corps what keep me in tire shop for 4 years.

Some would say that the Marine Corps did me dirty but, I say it taught me that you don't always get what you want but you make the best of the cards that you are dealt.

The Marine Corps taught me so much about life and being a man.

Semper Fi and happy Veterans Day.

Texas weather is being bipolar as usual.

Hot, cold, nice, cold AF, beautiful, but... You know the cold is coming.

The cold is on its way, so are high electric bills due to improper insulation.

➡️ Did you know that you can insulate the door that you already have?

➡️ Did you know that you can get a federal tax credit for insulated door?

Another Iconic install!!!

As many of you know, I have been installing a lot of doors for roofers across DFW.

Most homeowners want to go back with what the currently have BUT......some times they want to customize just a little bit to stand out in the neighborhood.

RKG Roofing, Renovations, & Restorations have a black roof, door, and gutter combo.

Well.... HOA requirement is carriage style doors with deco hardware.

A black garage door with black hardware would just be dumb.

After talking with homeowner, we decided on a color to match the brick.

Now, how to paint a brick color was the question.

I shot to Home Depot and started brain storming.

The end result came out pretty dope.

Let me know whatcha think and when are we going to murder out your home?

Photos from Iconic Exteriors's post 08/23/2020

White garage doors are hard to keep clean and looking new.

They age rapidly, and can bring down the curb appeal of your exterior.

This was a recent upgrade we did for a customer.

Look at that pop of color!

Are you ready to upgrade your aged, white garage door?

Photos from Iconic Exteriors's post 07/02/2020

I was super stoked about the install today.

I had a customer requesting a full view bar top door to lead from his garage to his outside oasis.

We did the deal and two weeks in, he texted asking if we could make it wider.

Customer service says, "yes sir but, its going to extend the lead time".

"As long as its done before the forth, we're good".

Well, me and Cody installed it today and I think it looks amazing.

The customer was stoked and said that they are going to invite both of our families out for the grand reveal party.

Cuatomer service is key to growth.

Perseverance and follow up are the key to getting paid.

Photos from Iconic Exteriors's post 05/22/2020

My technician Cody crushed the one piece take out to sectional conversion.

The homeowner Mr. Perez works out in his garage and was always complaining about how hot or how cold it was.

The overhead garage doors have a urethane injected insulation that bring the r value to a 19 and he sealed up the sides and the bottom to ensure no critters get in the house.

On a different note, mr. Perez has a Harley-Davidson for sale in mint condition if anybody's interested.

Photos from Iconic Exteriors's post 05/22/2020

Some beautiful before and after fence work that my boy Jose Perez did in Dallas Texas.

Out with the old in with the new, showing the difference between looking like everyone else in the neighborhood and being Iconic.
