No need to worry if you've got a great bookkeeper in your corner! πŸ‘‹

Whether you're a sole proprietor, a partnership, or a type of corporation, your tax accountant is going to be requesting these financial reports:

β†’ Balance Sheet
β†’ Income Statement (or P&L)

Your bookkeeping needs to be fully completed through the tax year for these to be used on your tax return.

I've got 3 more spots for bookkeeping clients this month, find out more at the link in our bio!

Here's a behind-the-scenes look at what my clients say when we first start working together:

πŸ’Έ I wasn't paying myself before, now I know I can afford too!

πŸ’Έ I never accounted for my payment processing fees!

πŸ’Έ I had no idea my business was making (or losing!) this much money!

πŸ’Έ I didn't realize I hadn't been paid for that yet!

Just because you can DIY your bookkeeping doesn't mean you should... this is your sign to hire a bookkeeper!

It's also a normal, necessary part of owning a business. Here are my tips to owning the awkwardness and charging your worth:

*Pssst* this is the EASIEST (and most necessary!) way to start saving on your taxes. πŸ’Έ

It's this simple...

Track your business expenses! I'm talking EVERY. SINGLE. ONE.

πŸ’Έ You can't deduct something you didn't track. And less deductions β†’ higher taxable income β†’ higher taxes paid.

Let's chat about your tax accountant's job for a second!πŸ‘‡

They help prepare your taxes, keep your business in compliance with federal, state, and local tax laws, and provide tax planning services.

Aside from years of education and powerful software, they need SOMETHING else to do their jobs too...

They need great bookkeeping!

Your tax accountant can't provide you with their best possible service if you don't provide them with a clear set of bookkeeping records.

Let me work WITH your tax accountant to help your business reach it's greatest potential. πŸ“ˆ

Cost of goods sold is a confusing expense for a lot of business owners, and I commonly see incorrect costs being included!

Cost of goods sold should include the direct costs of producing your product or service. This includes costs like manufacturing, packaging, shipping, and direct labor.

Indirect costs like marketing, sales, office rent, and administrative labor shouldn't be included in your cost of goods sold.

Need help making sure your expenses are categorized correctly?

Beware of this silent, business killer... SCOPE CREEP! 😱

To beat it, you've got to:

β†’ Define what's in-scope and
out-of-scope in your contract
β†’ Have a trusted referral partner for out-of-scope work
β†’ Increase prices for out-of-scope work
β†’ Communicate your boundaries politely + firmly

Don't feel bad about struggling with scope creep - every business owner does!

Here's how to find out EXACTLY what you need to charge to break even on your business:

β˜• To keep things simple, I'm going to use the example of a coffee shop. Starting with fixed costs, it costs the shop $1,000/month to stay open regardless of whether they have any customers.

Next, we've got to find out the contribution margin per cup of coffee. If it costs $2 (variable costs) to make and sell a cup of coffee, and the store charges $6/cup, then the contribution margin is $6 - $2 = $4.

To find the shop's break-even point, you'll take your fixed costs ($1,000) and divide them by your contribution margin ($4) to get 250 cups of coffee needed to be sold by the shop to break-even on a monthly basis.

Need help calculating your break-even point? I'd be more than happy to help!

When it comes to tax deductions for business owners, the BEST way to ensure that an expense can be written off as a tax deduction is to ask your tax accountant who is familiar with your unique business!

With that being said... I've compiled a list of 75+ expenses that *could* be deductible for you to run by your tax accountant!

Kind of like an ex that won't let you meet their family... your balance sheet can throw up red flags too! 🚩

A bookkeeping error may not be the cause of all of these red flags, but each of these is worth looking in to to ensure you fully understand what your balance sheet is reporting about your business!

🚘 DON'T FORGET🚘

For those who deduct their mileage, the IRS changed the deduction rate halfway through the year!

From January 1 to June 30, the standard mileage deduction was 58.5 cents/mile.

From July 1 to December 31, the standard mileage deduction increased to 62.5 cents/mile.

02/04/2023

Professional fees (like tax preparation or legal fees) are tax-deductible for businesses.

And guess what... your bookkeeping fee is a write-off!

It's a win-win-win! You don't have to worry about keeping up with your bookkeeping, you can feel CONFIDENT in your numbers, and you can decrease your taxable income.
