That's a wrap on National Rural Water Association (NRWA)'s 2023. Thanks to the NRWA for an inspiring conference bringing together all aspects of rural water. It was great to network with some amazing water professonals dedicated to providing safe, clean water to their communities.

Two trillion.
Yes, trillion. That's how many gallons of water the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates is lost each year in the nation's water distribution systems, costing $2.6 billion.
Water loss doesn't only cost money, but also valuable resources that impact the environment -- fresh water and the energy required to treat it. When water losses mount, all these are wasted.
We discuss the challenges and potential solutions to water loss behind the meter as part of the National League of Cities' Summer of Savings and Solutions during a webinar at 1 p.m. EST Aug. 3.

The city of El Paso, Texas, was receiving phone calls from homeowners experiencing water leaks and residential line issues. The city received so many, in fact, that El Paso decided to extend its partnership with HomeServe to include the ServLine Leak Protection Program along with its existing NLC Service Line Warranty Program
Our ServLine Leak Protection Program offers protection to utilities from bad debt while improving customer satisfaction, and protects their customers from an unexpectedly high water bill because of a water leak on their side of the meter.

Our Norwalk, Connecticut, employees recently participated in the Fairfield County 5K Run/Walk Corporate FunRun at Sherwood Island State Park. This great event featured a walk/run set against the beautiful background of the Long Island Sound and an after-party featuring great food & music.
Several of our employees from our Chattanooga, Tennessee, operations center rose bright and early Memorial Day for the 56th annual Chattanooga Chase, the country's oldest competitive road race, at the beautiful Riverview Park. The event is coordinated by The Chattanooga Track Club & our employee participation was facilitated by our HomeServe Wellness Committee.
Warmer weather means gardening, and those who answered a recent HomeServe poll said that they were looking to reduce their grocery bill through their garden. Twenty-two percent said they had previously planted fruits and vegetables to save money, another 23% said they planned a garden this year and 5% had done so in the past but didn’t plan to continue.
In 2022, the cost of food increased by 9.9%, and the cost of “food-at-home,” or the meals we prepare for ourselves, increased by 11.4%, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Americans spend an average of $438 monthly for food-at-home, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The average cost to establish a vegetable garden is $238, which provides veggies worth an average of $677, more than 280% of the startup cost, according to the Journal of Extension. What does more than $600 worth of vegetables look like? Like more than 300 pounds of produce.
Many of those who answered a recent HomeServe poll were looking forward getting moving. Thirty-nine percent said their favorite outdoor activity is walking, hiking or running, 29% said they enjoyed an outdoor gathering such as a picnic or cookout, 16% are looking forward to a trip to a park, zoo or other outdoor venue and another 16% can’t wait to get back into the garden.
Spending time exercising outside has been connected to improved brain functions such as attention and memory, University of Victoria researchers found. Their study showed that where someone exercises may have a bigger impact on cognition than the actual act of exercising. Studies also have shown that spending time outside also has mental health benefits, improves mood and self-esteem, and lowers stress and blood pressure.
In a poll series by HomeServe, 52% of respondents said they most missed longer days and more sunlight and 35% missed warmer weather.
It’s not surprising that we crave sunlight. The Mayo Clinic notes that the less sunlight you’re exposed to, the more likely you are to experience Seasonal Affective Disorder. In the U.S., days are slightly shorter in the Northern half of the country; thus, there are more cases of SAD reported there.
Researchers have speculated that less sunlight might disrupt the levels of serotonin and melatonin in the body, which can adversely affect mood and sleep patterns. Colder weather also may lead to becoming less physically active and more isolated, which also can have a negative impact on mental health.
Researchers also have found a link between sun exposure and lowered blood pressure. Sun exposure also can promote the production of vitamin D and improve bone health.
Taking the time to set our indoor spaces in order can boost our mood and improve our health.
In a recent HomeServe poll, 11% of respondents reported having already done a spring cleaning and 49% said they planned on spring cleaning, while 28% said they would “eventually” get around to doing it and only 11% didn’t plan to give their home a spring cleaning.
Spring cleaning became necessary when homes were heated and lit by burning fuel, meaning that, after a cold and dark winter, homes had a layer of soot. However, there are benefits to the practice of spring cleaning currently.
A spring cleaning can improve the air quality in the home by reducing dust and allergens, reduce the chances of illness through sanitizing, improves focus and sleep quality and reduces stress and anxiety.
Air pollutants such as dust, mold, mildew and pet dander not only trigger allergy attacks, but they can lead to inflammation and immunosuppression of the respiratory system.
Psychologists encourage a true de-cluttering – throwing away or donating unneeded items – to achieve the maximum mental health benefits over re-organizing existing clutter. In fact, 61% of Americans reported feeling de-stressed after cleaning, according to an OfferUp study, and a University of California study found a link between cluttered homes and depression.
Today, we remember.
The Norwalk Engagement Committee facilitated an opportunity to participate in a Coastal Cleanup and remove 70 pounds of trash from one of our beautiful local beaches! It was a great day for volunteering and we thank all of our employees who participated.
Several of our Chattanooga operations center employees recently attended the Habitat for Humanity of Greater Chattanooga Area's Women Build Breakfast. The Women Build Program has called on women to advocate for affordable housing, fundraise and build homes for Chattanooga families since 1996.
The breakfast was an opportunity to connect with other community-minded volunteers and celebrate this year's homeowner, Wilma. HomeServe's contingent was cheering her on as she told her story -- the story of the 29th women-built home erected in Chattanooga through the program.
Nine hundred billion gallons of water are lost to household leaks every year, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. How many more gallons are lost each year to water service line breaks?
Over the past five years, HomeServe has saved three billion gallons of water by repairing water service lines -- the equivalent of more than 4,600 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
Our program not only shields residents from the unexpected cost of an emergency repair and provides access to timely repairs done by local, licensed and insured plumbers, but educates them about their responsibility to maintain and repair their water service lines at no cost to your community.

There are six million people in the U.S. who are receiving water from water systems with elevated lead levels. Additionally, the leading cause of lead in residential water supplies is the home's own plumbing.
Through our water service line repair program, HomeServe has replaced 13 miles of lead water service lines for homeowners. Not only does our program shield residents from the often unanticipated cost of lead line replacement, it also educates them about their responsibility to maintain the service lines connecting their homes to their local utility.
