It's a s**tty truth for sure
People are shallow and insecure
They take and don't appreciate
They take and don't care to relate
Attracted to the wealth you acquire
Saying it's you that they desire
Then once all the money is gone
You find yourself standing there alone
Remembering the time that you spent
Starting to stew and begin to resent
All of the kindness you've shown
And all of the dollars that you have blown
The budget you had being scattered
Finding out later that you never mattered

Bad Juju Magumbo
Uh Bad Juju Magumbo
You're gonna walk into a pole
You're gonna fall into a hole
Ya got a dark cloud loomin' 'round
Gonna step into a puddle
Lots o'demons gonna huddle
'bout the bubble sound that makes you drown
Bad Juju Magumbo
Uh Bad Juju Magumbo
Gonna hit ya with the floodin'
Fill your lungs all up with mud and
Get that dirty water in your soul
Ya know there's nothing you can do
To get the voodoo outta you
They try to make your life as black as coal
Bad Juju Magumbo
Uh Bad Juju Magumbo
Ya try to break it all apart
An' use the goodness of ya heart
And hope tomorrow brings a brighter day
But there's a devil out to get ya
Light the fire that'll setchu
On the misery that come what may
Bad Juju Magumbo
Uh Bad Juju Magumbo
Ya follow everywhere I go
An' you're a hurricane uh blowin
It's uh Bad Juju Magumbo
Bad Juju Magumbo
Uh Bad Juju Magumbo
Gonna wake and stub your toe
Before ya get your day uh goin'
Gonna get a pebble in your shoe
Set you up in a conundrum
Gonna knock you on your bum
And gonna beat'cha til your black and blue
Bad Juju Magumbo
Uh Bad Juju Magumbo
Gonna make ya spill your java
Piping hot like it was lava
Getcha wide awake another way
Ya hear the clicking from the starter
Find ya praying then ya barter
Asking God to help ya one more day
Bad Juju Magumbo
Uh Bad Juju Magumbo
It's gonna make ya late to work
Ya know your boss is just a jerk
He's gonna can ya 'fore ya hit that clock
Ya blow a tire on the way or
Overheat the radiator
Leave your keys inside a door that's locked
Bad Juju Magumbo
Uh Bad Juju Magumbo
Ya follow everywhere I go
An' you're a hurricane uh blowin
It's uh Bad Juju Magumbo
Bad Juju Magumbo
Uh Bad Juju Magumbo
Gonna walk into a pole

Got a dark cloud loomin' 'round

My mania friend finds himself on a stage
The depressive one reminds me of my age
And my mania mind lifts me up and on high
Depressive aits and let's life pass him by
It's that manic attraction that draws your attention
Rejecting depressive and sad condescension
My manic protector puts sad out of mind
While depressive seeks joy that it can't seem to find
I'm on top of the world when the mania rules
Then depressive steps in and makes us look like fools
I can rock out and dance in the mania body
But dang that depressive make me sick and shoddy
In sickness and health they both fight for my time
As this poem continues they fight for their line
It's a back and forth constant no forecast ahead
Of the weather we weather of whether ones fed
It all happens at once as they spin me around
One will dance around free while the other is bound
Then the knots of the rope loose from the thrashing so violently
One will sneak up on the other so silently
Muffled in hand with the chloroform rag
Mindset falls hard and his eyelids will drag
Will I wake up again and find mania conquesting
Laughing as depressive gets its outlasting
The mania stifling depressive thought
I'll tell him to please give it all that he's got.
Twisted heart drips poison out and seeps into my soul
Just can't seem to climb out of this dark sad empty hole
I try to talk about it but no answer soothes the sore
My heart will ask my mind what we are even living for
No satisfaction finds me but instead an emptiness
Devoid of any joy instead defeated and depressed
I haven't found a way to want to live another day
Nor have I found a path to keep this wretched pain away
Anxiety attacks me and the panic digs in deep
Sowing seeds of low esteem it's misery I reap
Self deprecating madness keeps a raging war inside
The mask I wear in public is the smile that helps me hide
Bleeding positivity and spouting all good things
Internally disaster wreaks the havoc that it brings
Spinning in tornado form becomes a hurricane
The writing on the wall spells out that I'm going insane
It's all that I can do to keep from drowning in the muck
I used to see a way out but these now all I am is stuck
No medicine to salve or solve this monumental itch
The sutures keep on splitting open popping out the stitch
I don't know where to go with this and don't know what to do
I'm lost inside the madness and it makes me angry too
I'm still confronting demons that have sabotaged my path
I'm working toward happiness while holding back my wrath
I know I'm not alone in all these battles that I fight
I know that there are others dealing with it day and night
The more I learn my value and the ways that I've helped some
By sharing my own problems leading them to overcome
If you can relate to this I'm sorry life's this way
Please offer someone kindness and you might just save their day
Back to Front
No one can see the perspective I see
For I am the blind side of all
I am the part of the body behind you
With very few things I recall
There's a whole world that's around me
But I pay attention to half
The one that's on front with the vision
Trailing or blazing a path
I can recall the fall backwards
And I made the front side see light
Sometimes they light turned to darkness
When thumped hard so we go night night
I didn't see knives that were coming
So I couldn't warn you ahead
It's shocking how many are in there
Surprised we're not already dead
I like to try hard to remember
When my itch was scratched and who did it
A kindness someone else offered
When my reach just couldn't get it
I've cherished the arms wrapped around me
I'm certain that you feel the same
For your are the front of our body
And I was the side spanked to tame
I'm facing the past that we've lived in
The things that we both leave behind
Literally dealing with crap from you eating
All your food that comes to mind
I might be just a bit jealous it seems
Nothing that I'll ever face
So don't you dare take it for granted
Go win in this human race
I keep hearing it from the wind
The birds keep singing their song
A barrage of these accusations
Saying I'm lying, and wrong
These haters and manipulators
They say that I am a fraud
They talk behind my back and attack
Speculating that it is odd
This man who can stand on a stage
And one day sing out his heart
The next day lay flat on his back
Then for weeks just refuse to restart
He is just lazy and faking his illness
He just wants to have your attention
He must like the pain meds and stillness
And whatever bu****it they mention
Quite frankly I've been here for life
That is the sentence I'm given
This putrid existence in torment
Won't kill me, just makes me keep livin'
You keep adding salt to my wounds
Keep seething your venomous spout
I'm busy with s**t that I go through
Whether I'm with you or without
You acid foul oral infection
You bile infestation of spew
When Hell thought of what it should look like
It certainly thought about you.
In this world full of wonders
We still find the room
To let our minds convince our generations to consume
Work for less than you can live
With scraps to bring back home
Leave your kids with strangers
So their "class" is better known
Are they "smart" or "stupid"?
Label each one for a job
The cycle keeps them all in line
To perpetuate the snob
Presidential flash cards
Changing hands and bank accounts
Everyone's a number
One identifies...one counts
Who are you maybe 1,2,3?
Are you a member of the cult
The cult of personality
We wonder why there is no peace
Then baracade our walls
When only the few are criminals
Where are the good ones with the balls?
If there's a danger in the room
No reason it shouldn't be you
If you wish harm on others,
Would you stand up with me too?
The justice system tried
But society has lost respect
Now people hate the badges
And most signed on jus to protect
I've met my share of Jack ass cops
Who gush testosterone
But most I know just want to do their job
Then make it home.
The rant I rave
is just a single thought consuming time
Decide for yourself
if there's any reason to the rhyme
Probably all psychobabble
You can't understand
It says so on your calendar
In the life you've gone and planned.

The End
By Kicker
The rush to demise is clawed out from my chest
Talons that shred me and give me no rest
Tattered from darkness that rips from within
Mouth curls itself in sadistic grin
Spouting out hatred and black burnt up oil
A festering pus wound and rupturing boil
The seething increasing unceasing indeed
The spawnn is of Satan a Damien seed
Born of destruction the dragon overtakes
Twisting lies spoken with no heaven sakes
Icy hot cold sweltering day and night
Lethargic psyche lost all will to fight
The bullet. The cliff. The bridge or the rope.
The demons remove every true sense of hope.
The world is an enemy far from a friend
The joy comes with sorrow as hope for the end.
You steal the child from loving parent
Hide away the truth
You slay the smiling innocence
Demolishing their youth
Fabricated lies become
A fake version of real
Blinding eyes and twisting hearts
To change the way they feel
The brain is washed of good things
Theft of joy that parent can give
Corrupting every aspect
Refusing to let love live
You blackened hearts beware
It is God who hates you most
You take what doesn't belong to you
Then stand your ground to boast
Heaven works against you
As you operate from hell
Your darkness overcomes you
And we know that blackness well
Sick and twisted thoughts
That cross your mind to lie about
Your pedophillic brain
Will give me every cause for doubt
Your grotesque mutilation
Of the facts surrounding reality
Proves you're so unfit
Your life is teetering in frailty
In all of these mistakes you make
I am to blame for one
The fact I let you touch me
Back when all of this begun
So now for all their life
Our child will suffer as I do
The pain is caused unnecessarily
And all because of you.

Frustration setting in
Don't know where to begin
Feelings of doubt begin to start
Flooding painful emotions into my heart
I want to be strong for you and I
I want to make you proud
But my sadness is making me cry
and I truly don't know why.
These feelings and emotions are taking over like a fire
Yet, my mind knows that they are a liar.

Where do I go?

I sit there watching as you stumble around with your words.
The lies coming from your mouth are like a flock of dark and angry birds.
You spin each tale, with your web of deceit. Smiling with arrogance and conceit.
You throw out your daggers like jagged thorns.
Attempting to turn the lies against me to wrath and scorn.
Instead, I bow my head in humor and walk away in comedic laughter.
As your words and statements against me no longer matter.
By Tristen Pilato
For all the things that life would give
I feel a reason I should live
It makes me sit and wonder why
This heart will cause this flesh to die
Now that my child has chosen me
It changes who I want to be
With all my heart I wish and pray
That my 3 girls will look my way
See their dad in a whole new light
And for their hearts they will let me fight
Share with them all that I own
Teach them with the life I've shown
Be a good dad to them all
How to raise up after a fall
Teach them just how valuable they are
The end of space is not too far
Be the person you want to be
Open up your eyes to see
Your heart is mine to defend
No matter when this life should end
And should there be a fateful day
When you should give your heart away
That they will treat you like they should...
Dang it...couldn't finish, gotta get on another plane...
I love you beauties!
You are always on my mind.
Poem from December 2015
In muted grunts and grinding wretch
This mortal clay does wither
When hours pass to days that last
And peace will come not hither
Befuddled Soma spine in ruin
A breath to meditate
Wreaking havoc heart is spastic
Seizures at the gate
Spinal system fused and Degenerative
Nerves that send ice picks through flesh
Throbbing brain swells to the cranial walls
No escaping nor foresight of rest
Porcupine creatures walk freely below
The layers of dermal tissue
Pruritus consuming as I rip the skin
Revealing my internal issue
Connective ligament at the elbow
The "-itis" that's in that tendon
Ripped from the bone hauling firewood alone
Knock the pain with ibuprofen
A golf ball sized knot on the left foot and right
Feel stilletto style blades at the joint
The concave that holds in my shoulder restricts me
So it only works at some point
Hands feel the years of hard labor and time
All the dough put in other men's pockets
The spoils of my efforts regarded as moot
As I come apart here at the sockets
The fibromyalgia spills poisonous toxins
That paralyze my every move
Fatigued with my muscles corrupted and useless
No matter what psyche will choose
Allergic to meds that would otherwise help me
Solutions to pain a far reach
Cervical spasms and mind suck in chasms
Yet still there a lesson to teach
Like Shawshank Redemption I'm happy to mention
A logic which there's no denying
Time is so short so you should "get busy living...
..or get busy dying."
I am a fortunate cursed individual
In harmony finding purpose in pain
I both feel and receive the residuals
Empathy cursed me to also relate
To the thorns that your world will provide
So traumas teach lessons I've already lived
Helping others to find peace inside.
These few little problems that litter this post
Are a glimpse in my most often week
The hope is that you find some hope in the words
Giving life is the life that I seek.
A true story fron 2015
Here in Denver
I played some music at the pub
I was warmly greeted
With Denver love
When I went to the church
We didn't mix
So they told me it was wrong for me
I got 86ed.
I shared Jesus in the bar
And I walked as He would
By just loving people
And sharing his good
At the bar I was treated
Like a family friend
I was told they would miss me
And to come back again
But imposters at church invaded
When I asked for an ear
He told me that I
Couldn't find my rest there
I was drilled with the questions
Asking "HOW DO YOU KNOW?"
"ARE YOU A BELIEVER?"
"WHERE WILL YOUR SPIRIT GO?"
No matter my heart
There was just no defence
As I tried to bring reason
I just couldn't make sense
The words formed together
Were stopped at the ears
For all of the "church people"
Stuck in their fears
Lost in a box
Where they trap in their God
Beating the world
With their self righteous rod
Blame you for sins
While they hide from their own
Holding their heads
So their nostrils are shown
You look down your nose
And you think yourself right
Throwing your stones
Always ready to fight
A Pharisee, a rival
A boastful loud sound
Lifting yourself
But your words run aground
Leeching off wallets
And begging for money
That's why people call you
A joke that's not funny
You come in the name
Of your God who just Hates
Closing the doors
And locking up gates
Teaching that Jesus
Only loves the church people
Bricking up buildings
And raising your steeple
My advice to you my friend
Open your heart
And let Jesus back in
Learn how Christ did it
Go back to the start
If Christ doesn't live in your shoes...
He doesn't live in your heart.
By Kicker Shaver
There's a particular type of person
That a toxic person makes.
Their inner self forced into constantly questioning who is real or of all the fakes
The trauma pursues them in sub, un-, and conscious
Demeaning their every esteem
Their character an enemy battling thoughts
In their mind there's no concept of team
The things they were taught of themselves by the poison
With harsh words that damage a life
A new generation of cycling recycling cycles of twisting the knife
Until such a time in that beaten down world that some courage to change should be found
And somehow the cycler steps out of there spin
Turns their wheels to the to of the mound
While paused at the top there's a much better view
As the vortex slows down in their eyes
The big picture visible making it easier
To see through the toxic disguise
Ponder this poem should you find yourself troubled
If toxic people come your way
You hold the power extinguishing Gaslighters
By simply just stepping away

The power of stepping away.
You can write poetry too by using some of these processes.
What advice would you give to inspire a new poet?
The dad I could have been
Would tuck you in to bed at night
The dad I should have been
Was right to fight with all my might
We would have flown those butterflies
When your eyelash kissed my cheek
We'd have had all kinds of fun
Playing games like hide and seek
All the things we might have done
The things we'd see and where we'd go
Times we should and could've had
Are so far gone well never know
I dreamed I had you in my life for every day
Before my broken heart just took you away
Can't have my cake and try to taste and eat it too
My death first happened on the day that I lost you
To be continued

I CAN'T DESCRIBE THIS FEELING
THIS EMOTION IS SO NEW
AMERICA, MY BEAUTY
HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN TO YOU
YOU STAND SO TALL AND PROUD
YOU STAND SO STRONG AND TRUE
TO THOSE WHO DARE TO CROSS YOU
ANNIHILATION SHALL COME DUE
TO YOU WHO HURT MY COUNTRY
LORD HAVE MERCY ON YOUR SOUL
DESTRUCTION OF YOUR CAUSE
BECOMES OUR ONLY GOAL
TO ALL THE FAMILIES SHATTERED
BY DESTRUCTION THROUGH YOUR PLANS
WILL BE AVENGED BY LIBERTY
WE'LL SEARCH THROUGH ALL THE LANDS
DEFENDING LADY LIBERTY
STANDING IN HER STEAD
WORRY, TURN, AND WATCH YOUR BACK
BECAUSE A PRICE IS ON YOUR HEAD.
The Heroes Collection of Prayers
By Kicker Shaver
A tribute to the heroes of 9/11
A SOLDIER'S PRAYER
DEAR GOD PLEASE PROTECT ME
IN MY JOURNEY TO FIGHT
I'M STANDING IN DANGER
DEFENDING WHAT'S RIGHT
COMMISSION THE ANGELS
TO WATCH OVER ME
AS I FIGHT FOR MY COUNTRY
WHO WILL DIE TO BE FREE
BE WITH MY FAMILY
IN THEIR TIMES OF NEED
AS I CANNOT BE THERE
FOR MY TROOPS I MUST LEAD
ALL THAT I ASK
I PRAY YOU'LL KEEP IN MIND
FOR I MUST PROTECT
ALL THESE FAMILIES OF MINE
MY SPOUSE AND MY CHILDREN
MY SOLDIERS IN THE FIELD
MY COUNTRY, PLEASE GUARD US
WITH YOUR MIGHTY SHIELD
MY FAMILY, MY COUNTRY,
MY WOMEN AND MEN,
IN YOUR NAME I PRAY
ALL THESE THINGS...
AMEN
A FIREFIGHTER'S PRAYER
HEAVENLY FATHER,
KEEP US IN YOUR SIGHT
WE'VE HEARD THE ALARM
THERE'S A FIRE TO FIGHT
STANDING CLOSE TO THE FLAME
AS IT TRIES TO CONSUME
ALL IN IT'S PATH
LEAVING NOTHING BUT DOOM
WE STAND HERE TOGETHER
TO FIGHT THIS SO HARD
DEFENDING THE PEOPLE
AND THOSE THINGS LEFT UNCHARRED
THE HEAT BELLOWS OUT
FROM THE DEPTHS OF THE FLAME
AS WE SACRIFICE OURSELVES
TO THIS THING SO UNTAMED
NOW LORD I ASK
SHOULD I LODE MY LIFE
CARE FOR THE INNOCENT
MY CHILDREN, AND WIFE
STANDING HERE WITH MY BROTHERS,
MY SISTERS AND ALL
SHOULD ONE OF US DIE
SHOULD ONE OF US FALL
IN YOUR MIGHTY HAND
KEEP US HELD TIGHT WITHIN
IN YOUR NAME I PRAY
ALL THESE THINGS....
AMEN
A POLICE OFFICER'S PRAYER
PLEASE SHIELD ME LORD
IN MY DAILY FIGHT
PATROLLING THE NEIGHBORHOODS
UPHOLDING WHAT'S RIGHT
FACING THE DANGERS
OF BOTH DAY AND NIGHT
YOU ARE MY COMFORT
AND MY GUIDING LIGHT
I ASK THIS OF YOU
SHOULD I NOT MAKE IT HOME
LET MY INTENTIONS
OF HONOR BE SHOWN
BE WITH MY FAMILY
AS I CAN'T BE THERE
HELP THEM TO UNDERSTAND
HOW MUCH I CARE
STANDING HERE WITH MY BROTHERS,
MY SISTERS, AND ALL
SHOULD ONE OF US DIE
SHOULD ONE OF US FALL
BLESS MY COUNTRY, MY FAMILY,
MY NEIGHBORS, AND FRIENDS,
IN YOUR NAME I PRAY
ALL THESE THINGS...
AMEN
A PARAMEDIC'S PRAYER
DEAR LORD
PLEASE PROTECT ME
WHEN I GET A CALL
I AM THE ASSISTANCE
SHOULD A CITIZEN FALL
THROUGH TRAUMA OR DRAMA
THROUGH GUNSHOT OR WOUND
I'M HERE TO PREVENT
THEIR LIFE ENDING TOO SOON
I FILL IN THE GAP
BETWEEN HOSPITAL AND HOME
SELFISHLY SACRIFICING
DANGERS UNKNOWN
NOW LORD I ASK
SHOULD SOME HARM COME MY WAY
HEED TO THESE THINGS
THAT I ASK YOU I PRAY
I LIFT UP THE PATIENTS
LOVED ONES, NEIGHBORS AND KIN
FROM OLD YOUNG OR YOUTHFUL
TO BITTERSWEET END
I LIFT UP MY COUNTRY,
MY FAMILY, AND FRIENDS
IN YOUR NAME I PRAY
ALL THESE THINGS...
AMEN
LIBERTY'S HUM
THE SOARING EAGLE SHEDS HIS TEARS
THAT HIT UNSTABLE GROUND
JUST LIKE THE FRIGHTENED FACES
AS THE BUILDINGS TUMBLE DOWN
LADY LIBERTY TURNS HER BACK
SHE JUST CAN'T BARE TO GLANCE
AT EVIL PLOTTED SABOTAGE
INNOCENCE WITHOUT A CHANCE
THE ANGELS SING AMAZING GRACE
AND TAKE THE LOST SOULS HOME
WITHOUT A CHANCE TO SAY GOOD-BYE
SO MANY FAMILIES LEFT ALONE
AS THOSE WHO SUFFER IN THE GRAVE
WILL HAVE THEIR VENGEANCE COME
UPON THE MAN WHO STOLE FROM THEM
BECAUSE AMERICA WILL NOT RUN
THE EAGLE HE NOW SMILES WITH PRIDE
FOR HE KNOWS OF THE FATE
WE STAND TOGETHER ONE AND ALL
BECAUSE JUSTICE CANNOT WAIT
LADY LIBERTY SHEDS A TEAR
BUT SINGS A SILENT HUM
BECAUSE SHE KNOWS LIKE ALL OF US
AMERICA WILL OVERCOME...
TRIBUTE
I STAND IN AWE AND SING ALOUD
A TRIBUTE TO THOSE WHO SERVE
AND I MUST SAY THAT I AM PROUD
TO SING WHAT THEY DESERVE
A METAL OF HONOR A TEAR FROM ALL
SALUTE AND SHOW RESPECT
WHEN ALL GAVE SOME AND SOME GAVE ALL
AND SOME WHOSE LIVES WERE WRECKED
NO I'VE NEVER SEEN A WAR
NOR HAVE I SERVED MYSELF
BUT HEROES BOTH NEAR AND FAR
SHOULD NOT BE ON A SHELF
CARRY VETERANS IN YOUR MIND
NEVER DO FORGET
THAT NO ONE SHOULD BE LEFT BEHIND
FOR WE ARE IN THEIR DEBT
The Little Paper Airplane
I looked up in the sky and saw
A little paper airplane fly
With everything that's going on
I can't believe it caught my eye
I found it all too curious so I followed it around
And when I read the words inside
I felt my heart fall to the ground
This is my final word
My last testament and will
Take it to my family
So they'll know just how I feel
To my wife I love you so
And I will forevermore
Won't get to see the children grow
But you'll do just fine I'm sure
Kiss and hug them every night
And tell them daddy loves them still
I'm on my way to heaven now
And I'll be waiting there until
I took the paper airplane there
And delivered it to them
And in her eyes I'm sure I saw
A gleaming picture of him
He was in the top of it
Living in his final hour
His last thought was to send a plane
From the top of that twin tower.
Seeking Hope
The crosshairs trained
I have my orders
Trifling over these foreign borders
Pull the trigger and take a life
Haunting forever the rest of my life
Fighting in the scope of death
Fighting till my final breath
For my country and for you
Hoping that my aim is true
Many lives my bullets take
Sleeping eyes that never wake
In this battle I kill a son
A husband, and brother to someone
The choice was mine to serve my nation
So I'm here to stand my station
Will you judge me when I'm home
Raise me up on heroes throne
Will you spend the blood I bought
Or will I be a man forgot
Us U.S.
I am you in your defense
You hold my gun in happenstance
We are linked through nations bond
Warring in this world beyond
You are safe because of me
Matters not if you believe
For I'm your brother and here I stand
Fighting in this foreign land
Hazardous storms does my body travel
So our values don't unravel
Defender of our family name
And since I'm you we do the same
Though we have our separate fates
We all defend the United States
TO LIVE IS TO DIE
TODAY AS I WAIT FOR MY NUMBER IS CALLED
I'VE DRAWN FROM THE SCROLL
AND THE TIME HAS NOW DAWNED
A HAND IS HELD OUT
AS I REACH FOR THE SKY
KNOWING THAT I'VE
GIVEN LIFE WHEN I DIE
I'VE FOUGHT FOR THE FREEDOM
THAT FLOWS FOR A NATION
HOLDING MY GROUND
AND DEFENDING MY STATION
LOOKING BACK WATCHING
MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS
KNOWING THAT THEY WILL SHED
TEARS AT MY END
MISSING MY PRESENCE
BUT KNOWING MY CAUSE
LIKING MY QUALITIES
IN SPITE OF MY FLAWS
BY BODY LIE BROKEN
AND BLOODY FROM WAR
SO NOW TO SAINT PETER
TO CLAIM MY REWARD
HE STANDS AND HE SMILES
AS HE USHERS ME IN
FAREWELL TO YOU ALL...
THIS IS NOT THE END.
WARTIME CHRISTMAS (BASED ON THE STORY)
By Kicker Shaver
A PEACEFUL SNOW HAS FALLEN
A LULL HAS FOUND
THIS BATTLE PLAIN
A FAMILIAR SOUND
HAS CROSSED THE FIELD
A TOO FAMILIAR WANE
TRIGGER FINGERS
FROZEN AND
IMPOSSIBLE TO SHOOT
THE VOICE ACROSS THE WAY
HAS WARMED
THE CHERISHED TRADITION ROOT
A SILENT NIGHT IS SHATTERED
WITH A VOICE
SO CRISP AND CLEAR
MELLIFLUOUS IN NATURE
AND SO PLEASING
TO THE EAR
WE GATHER FOR TONIGHT
NOT AS SOLDIERS
BUT AS MEN
FOR IN THE MORN
THE BATTLE CRY
WILL FIND ITS WAY AGAIN
ITS CHRISTMAS HERE
ITS MIDNIGHT
AND ONE MINUTE INTO TRUCE
THIS SONG WE SHARE
THIS SOLEMN NIGHT
A GIFT IT DID PRODUCE
YES YOU ARE
MY ENEMY
AND TOMORROW WE BEGIN
BUT TONIGHT
WE'RE BROTHERS
YES TONIGHT YOU ARE MY FRIEND
The True story of the wartime Christmas Truce of 1941
The Beginnings
People associate the song Silent Night with the so-called "Christmas Truce" because it's the first song known to have echoed across the war-torn battlefield and also because for that night the rifles went silent. On that Christmas Eve, German soldiers began decorating their trenches and singing the famous song. Inspired, the British soldiers returned carols in English, and one of the most famous Christmas miracles of modern history was born.
The Truce
By December 24th, soldiers on both sides were discouraged and dispirited, and it's safe to say no one wanted to spend Christmas in a trench, far from family and friends. So it makes sense that both sides were ready for a truce.
Once the carols had been sung, soldiers began to shout greetings across the field. Several of the German soldiers spoke English, allowing the sides to communicate freely. Soon, brave soldiers began to visit across the neutral zone in the middle of the field (also known as "No Man's Land"). They exchanged gifts of whatever they had: whiskey, jam, ci**rs, chocolate and uniform buttons or pieces.
One of the more painful but important part of such Christmas miracles is the emotional impact, and the truce allowed both sides to retrieve soldiers whose bodies had fallen in the middle of the field. Prior to now, it had been too dangerous to emerge from the trenches to claim the bodies. Now, soldiers were given the chance to bury the bodies of their fallen brothers.
In fact, in some cases German and British soldiers joined together to hold funeral services for their friends, reading verses from the Bible, particularly the 23rd psalm.
All Good Things...
Unfortunately, Christmas miracles are often all too fleeting.
