The debate that wasn’t

By the halfway point of tonight’s debate, it was clear that the headlines were going to be: “Biden is washed up. The party is going to look at replacing him. Democrats are doomed!” It was also clear what the impact of this debate was going to be on the election: none.

How can I say that? For one thing, I don’t live inside the cable news vortex, where people on TV spin everything that happens as a totally doomsday thing while speaking to you in an earnestly rehearsed stately voice so they can keep you tuned in for as many hours as possible. I don’t watch MSBNC or CNN. I don’t read the political news outlets that craft every article with the intent of getting quoted on MSNBC or CNN. And I don’t follow the Twitter pundits who craft every tweet with the intention of getting booked on MSNBC or CNN. Instead I try to pay attention to facts, logic, and the real world.

Biden has spent the past month gaining in the polls and taking a narrow overall lead. The cold hard reality is that if Biden had been at his finest tonight (he was instead plagued by a severe cold), he could have expanded his lead, but that didn’t happen. Instead this was a debate in which neither Biden nor Trump scored any real points.

More succinctly, there’s not a single person who went into this debate with one voting intention and came out of it with a different voting intention. There’s no one who’s going to say “Well I was going to vote for Biden in order to stop the evil unhinged Trump, but now that Biden has a cold, I no longer think stopping Trump is important.” Nor did anyone with questions about who to vote for come out of tonight’s debate with any answers.

In other words, nothing changed in the real world. Biden was ahead by a point or two in the polls before this debate? And zero votes were changed as a result of this debate? Okay, so Biden will still have the same slight lead coming out of the debate. It’s simple logic. It’s correct. And no amount of cable news fantasy land performance art is going to change the validity of what I just said.

Still, you just know that if five new polls come out over the weekend and Biden is ahead in four of them and Trump is only ahead in one of them, the entire media (including your “friends” at MSNBC) will latch solely onto that one poll that has Trump ahead, and hold it up as supposed proof that the debate hurt Biden. Remember, the political media decides what the story is going to be, based on whatever it thinks will have the most ratings impact, and then cherry picks things out of context in order to support what it’s already decided the story is going to be.

I’m telling you that, for all the endless hyperventilating you’re about to hear on MSNBC and CNN (and from the people on Twitter who are parroting MSNBC and CNN in the hope of getting booked for guest spots on MSNBC and CNN), the impact of this debate on the election will be zero. It’s not the outcome I wanted or hoped for. I was hoping Biden would use this debate to pull further ahead, and that didn’t happen. But to claim that this debate will hurt Biden is just… utter nonsense. And the people who are saying this on TV know better.

Remember when President Obama got blown out in the first debate in 2012? Everyone on TV spent a week putting on the defeatist performance art of a lifetime, and everyone at home stared at their screens for that week in a panicked haze. And then the impact of that debate on the election ended up being zero. Biden did better tonight, in comparison to his opponent, than Obama did in 2012. It didn’t matter then and it won’t matter now.

He has more trials pending. Does that mean they’re gonna go after those judges, those grand jurors, those investigators and prosecutors and jury of his peers? Will they all become targets too. Oh, that’s right, they already are they get death threats, harassment, fired from their jobs. Ill because they stood up to this man/ mob boss and his crimes.
If Rhonda Santos and other Republicans want to keep up with this anti-American sentiment of supporting this convicted felon, who they know exactly who he is, then they lose a lot more than they think. They lose my vote.

Trump “accused” of influencing trial testimonies: New report suggests he financially “rewarded” multiple witnesses in the criminal cases

According to investigative reporting by ProPublica, nine witnesses received substantial financial benefits from Trump’s media company, campaign, and other business endeavors. These payouts, promotions, and other benefits were allegedly provided at crucial moments during Trump’s legal proceedings, raising suspicions of possible witness tampering.

One example is Boris Epshteyn, an attorney and investment banker involved in Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. Epshteyn testified before a Georgia grand jury that indicted Trump on election interference charges and was later interviewed by the federal special counsel investigating Trump.
Records show that Epshteyn received an average of $26,000 monthly from his New Jersey-based business, Georgetown Advisory, between November 2022 and August 2023. These payments increased to $53,000 per month following Trump’s federal indictments. Trump officials claim that Epshteyn’s raise was due to increased workload, but the timing has raised eyebrows among white-collar defense lawyers.

Dan Scavino, Trump’s communications aide with firsthand access to the former president during the lead-up to the January 6 insurrection, also received significant financial perks. Shortly after the congressional probe into Trump’s conduct began, Scavino secured a consulting deal worth $240,000 annually. He was later held in contempt of court for ignoring a subpoena but avoided major repercussions.
Additionally, Scavino was appointed to the board of Trump’s media company and received a $4 million executive promissory note and a $600,000 retention bonus. The exact dates of these payments are unclear, but they were reportedly between receiving the subpoena and testifying.

Susie Wiles, a political consultant and one of Trump’s aides, received a $75,000 payout from the Trump campaign to her consulting firm after Trump’s indictment in Florida for improperly handling classified documents. Wiles also received a 20% raise that May. Trump officials attributed these payments to contract renegotiations. Additionally, Wiles’ daughter Caroline was hired by the Trump campaign at a starting salary of $222,000, making her the campaign’s fourth-highest-paid staffer. Caroline Wiles asserts that the employment offer was based on her qualifications.

The report also mentions significant payments to members of Trump’s legal team. Atlanta-based attorney Jennifer Little and white-collar defense attorney Eric Corcoran were compelled to testify before the grand jury regarding Trump’s handling of classified documents. Following her testimony, Little received her largest-ever payout of $218,000 from a Trump political action committee. Similarly, Corcoran’s firm received two payments totaling $786,000 after his March testimony, marking the highest single-day payment for Trump’s campaign.

Concerns about potential witness interference were also raised before Trump’s conviction in New York. Allen Weisselberg, former chief financial advisor to Trump, was not called as a witness by prosecutors in last month’s proceedings because Weisselberg is still due several payments from a $2 million severance package agreed upon with the Trump Organization. The severance agreement includes a nondisparagement clause and language blocking Weisselberg from voluntarily cooperating with prosecutors.

Real estate developer and close friend of the Trump family Steve Witkoff testified in favor of the real estate operations of the Trump Organization during the New York civil fraud trial last year. Witkoff testified, and two months later the Trump campaign paid his firm over $370,000 for using its private jet, a service for which the campaign had never before paid Witkoff.
Confirming that the jet had been utilized for multiple campaign-related flights, Trump aides told ProPublica that the campaign had only chosen to charter Witkoff’s aircraft for “availability, space, and convenience.”

The ProPublica report underscores the complexity of tracking financial benefits linked to Trump’s witnesses. Russian disinformation sites linked to former Florida deputy sheriff, research finds

More than 150 fake local news websites pushing Russian propaganda to U.S. audiences are connected to John Mark Dougan, an American former law enforcement officer living in Moscow, according to a research report published Wednesday by NewsGuard, a firm that monitors misinformation.

The websites, with names like DC Weekly, New York News Daily and Boston Times, look similar to those of legitimate local news outlets and have already succeeded in spreading a number of false stories surrounding the war in Ukraine. Experts warn they could be used to launder disinformation about the 2024 election.

In an interview over WhatsApp, Dougan denied involvement with the websites. “Never heard of them,” he said
Dougan, a former Marine and police officer, fled his home in Florida in 2016 to evade criminal charges related to a massive doxxing campaign he was accused of launching against public officials and was given asylum by the Russian government. Most recently, Dougan has posed as a journalist in Ukraine’s Donbas region, testifying at Russian public hearings and making frequent appearances on Russian state TV.

He’s now part of a small club of Western expats who have become purveyors of English-language propaganda for Russia. Researchers and cybersecurity companies had previously linked Dougan to the sites. The NewsGuard report published Wednesday is the latest to implicate him in the fake news ring.

Academic research from Clemson University linked Dougan to the network of fake news websites last year after one of them was found to share an IP address with other sites he ran, including his personal website.

In an interview, Darren Linvill, co-director of the Watt Family Innovation Center Media Forensics Hub at Clemson, called Dougan “a tool of the broader Russian disinformation machine” whose websites “are just one of several mechanisms by which these narratives are distributed.”

Linvill noted the fake news websites had lately veered away from the narrow focus of undermining support for Ukraine. Recent fake articles include the false claims that the FBI wiretapped former President Donald Trump’s office at Mar-a-Lago, his estate in Florida, and that the CIA backed a Ukrainian plot to rig the election against Trump.

“There is no question we are beginning to see a shift in focus toward the U.S. election,” Linvill said.

Posing as local news, the sites host articles about crime, politics and sports, most of which seem to have been generated with artificial intelligence tools and are attributed to journalists who do not exist. Interspersed within the general news are articles that disparage the U.S., exalt Russia and spread disinformation about topics from the wars in Ukraine and Gaza to Covid vaccines.

Researchers say sites attributed to Dougan are marred with telltale signs of his signature, including early website registration records, IP addresses, similar image headers and layouts, being built with WordPress software, seemingly AI-generated prompts mistakenly left in copy and error messages at the ends of articles.

The reach of the campaigns varies. Some of the sites remained active for just weeks with little to no pickup in the wider media. But some fake news stories have gained traction, including several recent posts using forged documents that falsely claimed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was improperly using foreign aid to enrich himself. Last month, a story on the fake news site The London Crier said Zelenskyy had spent 20 million pounds on a mansion previously owned by King Charles III.

It followed a story posted to DC Weekly in November that falsely claimed Zelenskyy had used American aid money to buy two yachts.

Both rumors relied, as the network often does, on videos posted to YouTube by newly created accounts. A site like DC Weekly will publish fake news stories using videos of seemingly AI-generated “leaks” or examples of whistleblowing, and Russian influencers and bot networks will then spread those articles, according to the Clemson researchers. Ultimately, the fake articles are reported as fact by pro-Kremlin media outlets and, in some of the most successful cases, by Western politicos and pundits.

The rumor about Zelenskyy’s buying yachts was later promoted by Republican members of Congress, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia and Sen. JD Vance of Ohio.
