The Edwards Store Scale Model
The Edwards Store, Inc. Will host a scale model exhibit of the historic Latimer County structure, October 15-17 at a building adjacent to the Oklahoma Forestry Services office, 1379 NW Highway 2. The Edwards Store Scale Model - “It’s Time and Place” showcases a 1983 scale model of the 1850’s log cabin, the oldest existing building in Oklahoma from the Butterfield Overland Mail stage route. Exhibit hours are 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. daily. The dates, times were selected to coincide with the annual Robbers Cave Fall Festival at the state park just north of the Forestry Services office. The location was arranged by the Latimer County Tourism Trust Authority. The exhibit is open to the public at no charge. The Edwards Store, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated solely to restoration of the building, is the sponsor. In addition to LCTTA, the participants making the exhibit possible are Eastern Oklahoma State College and the State Historic Preservation Office. This link with the Butterfield route reflects the pivotal role the cabin played in the commercial development of Indian Territory. Between 1858 and 1861, stage drivers and passengers stopped at the homestead for lunch and to rest their horses. The Edwards building was added to the National Register of Historical Places in 1972. The model is one of six from 1983 statewide exhibit, ‘Diversity in Oklahoma Architecture.’ As it did 38 years ago, the Edwards Store scale model again represents an architecture style suited to Oklahoma’s weather and reflects the commercial success of a venture located about eight miles northeast of Red Oak. A special emphasis photo display highlights the model of the 1880 Green McCurtain home was destroyed by fire in 2019.
