I’m sure you’ve heard this before.

But what does it really mean?

Most people read this and think a few things…

𝘖𝘧 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦 𝘐 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬 𝘮𝘺 𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴, 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘦𝘭𝘴𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘐 𝘥𝘰 𝘪𝘵?

𝘔𝘺 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘺 𝘣𝘰𝘥𝘺, 𝘐’𝘮 𝘢𝘭𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘺 𝘪𝘯 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦, 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵?

Truth is 👉🏼 your cognitive brain doesn’t always have all the answers. And sometimes that mind of yours spins out of control, quite literally has a mind of its own, and wreaks havoc on your physical body. In the oddest of ways.

The connection from the mind to the body is STRONG 🧠 And because we think with our heads we can understand how that works.

What many can’t conceptualize is the body has that same strong connection to the mind, it just happens in a silent way because your mind isn’t the one sending out the signals🤯

Long confusing story short: if you’re working through anxiety, depression, stress, any mental health problem for that matter…it’s time to connect the body back to the thinking mind to get the best results possible.

And there are ways to do it. You just don’t know how yet. Even if you think you’re “already doing it”.

I used to work really hard to keep myself mentally healthy.

What I found out is that I was putting my hard work and time into the wrong places.

My priorities were mixed up. And it wasn’t my fault. I just didn’t know any better yet.

People love to ask how to get rid of their problems.

𝙃𝙤𝙬 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙄 𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙜𝙤 𝙖𝙬𝙖𝙮 𝙖𝙨 𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙘𝙠𝙡𝙮 𝙖𝙨 𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙗𝙡𝙚. 𝙄 𝙝𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙞𝙩. 𝙄𝙩 𝙛𝙚𝙚𝙡𝙨 𝙝𝙤𝙧𝙧𝙞𝙗𝙡𝙚.

Here’s my well rehearsed answer👇🏼

You sit through it. You watch it. You feel it. And eventually you make it out on the other side. Without your choice or consent. Because inevitably all things change. That’s the nature of life.

You don’t grab your problems by the reigns and pull tighter. You don’t try and shove the wrong shaped peg through the incorrect hole.

First, you try to sit and observe (hello - this is why we practice meditation🧘🏻). And within that stillness, even the smallest amount of clarity can arise.

This concept isn’t easy to implement. Because we want control. We want to do the right thing. We want to execute it with ease. And we want it done at the snap of our fingers.

Truth bomb coming in 💥 your “problems” will always be there. They will take different forms and disguise themselves in sneaky ways, but if you look closely they make a return appearance. Learn to watch them, the lesson they bring to the table, and how to get comfortable with their presence.

Sometimes all it takes is to start the difficult conversations.

The ones you think will make you look crazy. Or that no one will understand.

Feelings and thoughts and emotions weren’t meant to stay inside. They fester in there. And end up feeling a lot bigger than they actually are.

Find someone you trust and start talking.

I used to really like this concept.

It’s one from the high achiever handbook.

It sounds empowering - like you’re in control of all things. You can choose how you want to feel. After all, the power of the mind is an EXCEPTIONAL thing. And you can get through anything if you just get your mind on board...

But what happens when you can’t get over whatever you’re feeling or thinking or experiencing? Then what?

I’ll tell you…
A whole lot of frustration🤬
Self doubt😖
And cognitive dissonance🤯
Because you have nothing left to rely on after your mind isn’t working for you.

PSA ✨ some things need to be felt, said, and/or done to be MOVED THROUGH. And you deserve that. Instead of just having to get over everything ASAP and pushing yourself through sheer force and will.

GUESS WHAT?

You’re probably not alone.

Just thought I’d remind you in case you needed to hear that today.

Sometimes things can feel REALLY BIG inside your head. But once it’s out in the open it’s not so bad, or so lonely. You may even find along the way that you’re not the only one who thinks/feels the things you do.

Oh, and you’re not crazy🙃

I didn’t get the memo.

When I was younger, people told me I “didn’t have to feel that way”. I could just “look at it this way” or “cheer up” or “calm down”.

Omg lol why didn’t I think of that???🤯

I must have really missed the memo that I could just get over it and not be this way🥴

It sounds SO GOOD. But how do you get there, right?

This EXACT scenario inspired my approach as a doctor and a human. I wasn’t going to “fix” people or tell them how to be better. I was going to show them that things can be different when you have someone in your corner.

Find the people who:
🔹 allow you the space to feel your experience
🔹 sit with you in the trenches without rushing you out
🔹 understand non-judgement and how to practice it
🔹 create a relationship strong enough to build you up and call you out

They will help you change the memo✌🏽

The invisible struggle.

People all the time talk about the “signs” that someone is struggling. And this is true. There are signs for certain things.

But what about when you look like everyone else, talk like everyone else, and behave like everyone else. You’ve got it together. Seem pretty normal. You’re getting places in life…like BIG [normal people] places so you can’t be dealing with anything significant🤷🏻‍♀️

The truth is, struggling doesn’t have a standard. You don’t have to be stuck in bed, or not able to leave your house, or have an emotional outburst (or 10) before the day is done🤯

Struggling is your own perception. And it is as invisible as you make it👀

It’s time to cut ties with two things:
1️⃣ You have to check all the “boxes of crazy” to need/get support.
2️⃣ Someone has to look, talk, and behave a certain way to earn your support.

Actually doing the work.

I was having a conversation with someone yesterday about all of the changes they want to see in their life. It was a long list of improvements that in the real world require WORK.

But every time I brought up the concept of this work. It was met with:

“Oh but that wouldn’t do much”
“I don’t understand how that could change anything”
“Ya, I’ve been thinking about that”
“I could try that I guess”
“You’re right, I should do something”

And the truth is, if you’re not in a place to mobilize yourself and make your actions ALIGN with your goals/desires…then that’s cool. But it’s worth the double take to look back at yourself and recognize that you’re running circles🧐

There is something to be said about running circles, because eventually you’ll get to the point where you are ready to make change.

You have to start SOMEWHERE though.

If you find yourself resistant to making any changes, while at the same want to make SO MANY CHANGES - start with something simple. You’ll realize the benefit far outweighs the work. You probably just don’t know where to start🤯

For some reason, we have this concept that people who are “doing well” for themselves, getting stuff done, building a future, reaching goals, maintaining relationships, and pushing forward DO NOT STRUGGLE. It comes easy to them. That’s just who they are.

But what if they told you they struggle?

Maybe it doesn’t appear that way...but they experience all of that inside. While still trying to push through. Would you get it? Believe them? Or accept what they say for face value?

These concepts are NOT MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE.

You can be high functioning and struggle with your mental health.
