Scott Bridge crews spent the past nine days performing emergency repair work in our own backyard in Auburn, Alabama. The Wrights Mill Road overpass bridge was closed after an excavator passing underneath on I-85 struck two concrete girders. Since April 30th, SBC has worked around the clock on repairs, allowing the city to reopen the bridge ahead of schedule today!

In recognition of Construction Safety Week, we’d like to thank the men and women of Scott Bridge Company who strive to achieve the high standards of our SBC safety culture while working diligently on every project. Your efforts have not gone unnoticed. Last week, Scott Bridge Company was awarded the first annual Georgia Highway Contractors Association Safety Award for a medium-sized company that worked between 500,000 to 1 Million man-hours per year! Congratulations to our team, and thank you to the GHCA for this honor. We aim to always excel in putting Safety First!

One of our annual Management Meeting highlights is the SBC Crane Rodeo! Operators safely showed off their precision and speed skills on the Tadano 66-ton telescoping crawler crane and the Link-Belt 100-ton lattice boom crawler crane. Congratulations to this year’s winners, Austin Williams and Kaleb Fowler!

In 2023, Rusty Palmore and Bruce Rudolph celebrated a remarkable milestone of four decades with Scott Bridge Company! It was our pleasure to honor them Thursday night, as they have spent the past 40 years devoted to improving our region's infrastructure. During our annual Management Meeting dinner, we presented them with commissioned watercolor paintings by renowned artist Laura Lewis, depicting their most recent job in Jupiter, Florida. Rusty and Bruce, your unwavering loyalty to the SBC family and tireless service to our industry is truly inspiring! Thank you for your dedication and commitment to excellence.

When starting a new project, it is essential to not only set goals for stage progress and worksite safety but to commemorate those achievements as well. Last Thursday, we celebrated a safety milestone on our job site in Baldwin County with an on-site cookout! We marked six months of no workplace injuries and no lost time. Congratulations, Baldwin County crew, and keep up the safe work!

Last Friday, we attended Opelika City School's "Tools of the Trades" program and had a blast demonstrating some of the tools we use in our trade to OCS 5th graders. "Tools of the Trades" is designed to provide students with an interactive, hands-on experience to learn all about different careers in a fun and memorable way. This initiative is a great way to recruit the next generation of workers, and it was our pleasure to be included!

It was testing day for our crane operators in Savannah this week! Operators were certified by Crane Industry Services and Scott Bridge through NCCER’s Mobile Crane Operator Certification Program. Pictured are operators testing on a Manitowac 10,000- 100ton crane and a Tadano 66 ton telescoping boom crawler crane.

Last Wednesday night was an extraordinary evening for Scott Bridge Company. Our very own Cecil Smith was inducted into the Alabama Road Builders Hall of Fame! To say he is more than deserving of such an honor is an understatement, having spent a lifetime contributing to the advancement of Alabama infrastructure. Cecil exemplifies the role of a true Bridge Man- first on the job and last to leave, leading by example and teaching with compassion. He is known for shepherding his crews with wisdom and expertise while never lacking in humility or kindness. He has left a mark on this industry and will always be an example of someone to which we can all aspire. We had the pleasure of presenting to students at Auburn University's ASCE Career Lunch on Tuesday! We discussed movable bridges with specific examples from past and current projects, working for Scott Bridge Company, and general career advice for aspiring engineers. It's never too early to start planning for your future!

We had a great time Thursday hosting a group of Opelika Middle School’s eighth grade students for Career Quest 2023!

Students toured our Project Operations Center learning about different career paths within our company. From welding and trucking to steel fabrication and heavy machine operating, the future opportunities are endless for these bright young minds!

This week we had the pleasure of seeing the magnificent, “We’ll Meet Again: A New American Musical”. Based on the incredible life journey of Heinz “Henry” Stern, “We’ll Meet Again” is a must see for the entire family. Escaping N**i Germany at just age 5, a young Jewish boy, Henry Stern, and his family make a new life in Opelika, Alabama. Henry becomes a well known and beloved member of the community, spending a lifetime searching the United States for other family members who survived the Holocaust.
Both harrowing and uplifting, this musical shares a beautiful and important story that needs to be told!
The Stern family has had a lasting impact on so many in our community, including the Scott family, who consider the Sterns to be lifelong friends.
“We’ll Meet Again” will be touring Alabama throughout the month of September.

What’s great about employing an in-house education program? You can tailor it to your company’s specific industry!

Over the past few years, we have been working on customizing our crane operator training program to combine accredited materials with an emphasis on bridge construction activities. This way, we can teach the basics and also cover specific knowledge that is necessary to operate safely on our projects.

Operators spent this past week learning in a classroom setting at our headquarters and performing practical training at our project operations center. At the end of the week, a third party company proctored a written exam and conducted a practical evaluation required for NCCER certification on 3 different types of cranes.

Congratulations to our newly certified team members!

Last Friday, we celebrated the retirement of a very special employee, Mr. Ed Cloud.

Ed has worked as an Operator for Scott Bridge Company for the past 26 years at our Project Operations Center. He is known for his strong work ethic, positive outlook, and for mentoring numerous young men as they began their careers. Together with his loved ones and the Scott Bridge family, we enjoyed a lunch in his honor, hearing many stories about how much he has meant to so many. To say he will be missed is quite an understatement.
