Wants and Needs
Part of taking responsibility for us means taking responsibility for what we want and need, and knowing that's okay to do.

Learning to tune in to us, learning to listen to ourselves, is an art. It takes practice. We can use our ability to guess what others want and need and apply that skill to ourselves.

What does it sound like we might want and need? What would we guess would help us feel better? What are our feelings telling us? Our body? Our mind? Our intuition?

If we ask, then listen closely; we'll hear the answer.

We are wiser than we think, and we can be trusted.

What we want and need counts. It's important, and it's valid. It's okay to learn to participate in meeting our own needs.

We can learn to identify what we want and need and be patient with ourselves while we're learning.

Today, I will pay attention to what I want and need. I will not discount myself.

Those who are homeless to find shelter.
Those who are depressed to discover joy.
Those who are addicted to find release.
Those who are lonely to find friend.
Those who are confused or lost to find a path.
Those who are heartbroken to know that it will
pass.
Those who are sick to find healing.
Those who live in darkness to be covered in
light.
Those who are dying to know that they have
lived.
I pray today for peace where there is unrest,
for love to prevail over all.

Treatment is not the same as recovery
and many uniformed people are laboring under the mistaken belief that after drug treatment, "everything is all better" Nothing could be more further from the truth.
Addicts are afflicted with a lifelong chronic disease that can be treated and arrested a day at a time with one thing — a program of recovery. That program involves a concerted daily effort to maintain abstinence from all mind-altering drugs forever and ever. Many people have already had several treatment opportunities in the past but never followed up with ANY kind of after care. They will get no new information in treatment. What people need to realize is that after care and recovery must be the top priority in the lives of people who suffer with SUD. Staying clean must come first. The disease strikes in all other life areas as well. No matter where the addict stands, he or she has the disease breathing down hard....the disease is always right with the addict.
Doesn’t matter if the individual goes to treatment 1000 miles away...
The addict still has to come back to where they live eventually to hopefully commence a program of recovery and a new way of life. Geographic cures have yet to work with any addict....No matter how long the treatment episode lasts, addicts will need after care and ongoing support. Most addicts never follow-up with any type of recovery program post-treatment. They are in a period of long-term withdrawal (PAWS) once they leave the initial treatment....for many, this can last one to three years after their last use when they exit treatment. Many are taught those facts in treatment but few express the willingness or desire to pursue a true program of recovery when they return to the world.
There are no short cuts to treatment of the disease of addiction. It's a day at a time for the remainder of the addicts' lives.

Putting Our Life on Hold

We cannot afford to put our needs on hold, waiting for another person to fulfill us, make our life better, or come around and be who and what we want that person to be. That will create resentment, hostility, an unhealthy dependency, and a mess to deal with later on.

If we have decided we want a particular relationship or want to wait about making a decision in a particular relationship, then we must go on with our own life in the interim.

That can be hard. It can feel natural to put our life on hold. That is when we get caught up in the codependent beliefs: That person can make me happy... I need that particular person to do a particular thing in order to be happy....

That's a circumstance that can hook our low self-esteem, our self-doubt, and our tendency to neglect ourselves.

We can get into this situation in a number of ways. We can do this waiting for a letter, waiting for a job, waiting for a person, waiting for an event.

We do not have to put our life on hold. There will be repercussions from doing this. Go on with your life. Take life a day at a time.

What is something I could be doing now to take care of myself, make myself feel better, get my needs met in an appropriate, healthy way?

How can I own my power to take care of myself, despite what the other person is or isn't doing?

What will happen if I break the system and begin taking care of myself?

Sometimes, we get the answer we want immediately. Sometimes, we wait for a while. Sometimes, things don't work out exactly the way we hoped. But they always work out for good, and often better than we expected.

And in the meantime, we have manifested love for ourselves by living our own life and taking the control away from others. That always comes back to us tenfold, because when we actually manifest love for ourselves, we give our Higher Power, other people, and the Universe permission to send us the love we want and need. Stopping living our life to make a thing happen doesn't work. All it does is make us miserable, because we have stopped living our life.

Today, I will force myself, if necessary, to live my own life. I will act in my own best interest, in a way that reflects self-love. If I have given power or control of my life to someone other than myself, and someone besides a Power greater than myself, I will take it back. I will begin acting in my own best interests, even if it feels awkward to do that.
