This past Wednesday was the annual FAU Infrastructure Night. Paul Lampley, FDOT Director of Operations, District 4, was the Keynote speaker. Lots of college students and industry professionals were there and there were two rooms of sponsor/vendor tables including FC&PA and member companies.

Sam Middleton (Region 2 District Structural Materials Engineer-FDOT) facilitated an excellent and engaging presentation on concrete applications for UNF students.

FC&PA Members came out to support Block Kids, a building competition and career fair for K-6 grade students in Palm Beach County and Treasure Coast. The event was held by the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC). The kids learned about professionals in the construction industry with first hand experience in ready-mix trucks, a boom pump and a "block competition" with design instruction they followed.

FC&PA Region 6 members attended the signing of the proclamation of October being named “Careers in Construction” month for Okeechobee county. The Chairman for the BOCC spoke about how important careers in construction is to the county and for the students overall. The Okeechobee High School Building Construction program Lead Instructor, Steve Szentmartoni also attended (holding the proclamation in the pic). Region 6 will be doing a Concrete 101 for students very soon as well as a plant tour in Okeechobee.

A fun day was had by all at the Annual Treasure Coast Builders Association Golf Tournament at Monarch Country Club in Palm City. helped keep the players “Spirits” high.

The 2023 Safety & Skills Competition will take place November 11 at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, FL. This is the ultimate competition in Florida for ready-mix truck drivers, forklift, frontend loader and pump operators. The driver/operator registration deadline is October 11. American Concrete Pumping Association (ACPA)

John Roberts of the International Grooving & Grinding Association - IGGA will present on Safety Grooving – Sustainable Safety Solutions at a Competitive Cost at the 2023 PaveWise Concrete Conference.

Pavement grooving using diamond tipped sawblades dates back to the 1950’s and was one of the first major steps in achieving safer pavement surfaces in wet weather conditions. Studies conducted by the California Department of Transportation (CALTRANS) showed that these surfaces could reduce wet pavement accidents (hydroplaning) by 70%. This presentation will discuss the history and research related to safety grooving; the improved performance due to grooving; the design, layout and cost savings when installing grooving; and FDOT’s efforts to introduce diamond saw-cut grooving as a low cost, safety enhancement tool in Florida.

The PaveWise Concrete Conference has multiple sessions including a focus on Paving a Sustainable Future. Hessam Azarijafari from the MIT Concrete Sustainability Hub will present on the US Decarbonization through Pavement Life Cycle Strategies.

Pavements play an important role in achieving net-zero emissions in a decarbonized economy. This presentation will discuss the life cycle of pavements and their Greenhouse Gas emissions. Opportunities for reducing the pavement life cycle emissions at the design, procurement, and planning will be explained. The Streamlined MIT Pavement Life-cycle Assessment Tool is also demonstrated as a comprehensive way to assess the whole life cycle emissions of pavement projects.

About 1200 C/Y was poured for this project, which included pavement, color pavement and pavement with fibers. Concrete pavement is used for fueling areas, and the stamp color concrete is for the store entrance. The concrete will provide a long-lasting and easy clean-up in high-traffic usage areas.

Kenneth M. Justice, P.E. from the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association instructed industry professionals on pervious concrete paving at the Florida Concrete & Products Association last week. A pervious concrete system can replace a retention pond, bring stormwater runoff to zero all while recharging groundwater and cleaning pollutants in the water. Attendees learned about the environmental benefits, where to use it, how to find a certified contractor to place it and all resources for a successful project.

To further commemorate these drivers winning Employee of the Year at last year's Safety & Skills event, they were each awarded with a surprise $500 check.
