MLS Laser Therapy - Ankle Sprain
Do we consider ourselves Sports Chiropractors? Absolutely, and here's why! A high school volleyball player sprains her ankle early in the week while at practice. Friday she limps into our office for laser therapy treatment hoping she can play in her weekend tournament. Would you believe us if we told you she could play five volleyball games on Saturday? She did! This video below was taken on the Monday after her tournament. You can see the leakage of blood into the surrounding tissues of her ankle, and what's happening is the red blood cells are carrying oxygen and nutrients to the injured area. The purple and blue colors come from hemoglobin, an iron-containing protein in red blood cells. Hemoglobin changes color as it breaks down, going from red to purple to green and yellow as it is metabolized and reabsorbed by the body. Yeah, but how does laser therapy help heal an ankle sprain? Laser light will significantly increase the formation of new capillaries in damaged tissue, speeding up the healing process. It also creates higher outputs of specific enzymes, and greater oxygen and food particle loads for blood cells. On Friday's visit, during her first laser treatment, the ankle was swollen, and no bruising was present. You can see that we've already expedited the healing process after just one treatment. P.S. Here’s a teacher in her late 20s who’s been dealing with the stress of setting up her classroom and using a computer for extended periods to create lesson plans (among all the other tasks associated with being a teacher). She’s been suffering from neck pain and intermittent headaches throughout the past week. We’ve added the MLS Laser Therapy to enhance the healing process in conjunction with chiropractic adjustments. In the first part of the video, you can see her lying down with a “red plus sign” moving up and down her neck. That’s where the laser is penetrating the tissue to provide musculoskeletal relief. In the later portion, you can see the doctor using a handheld piece, and for her, we’re working on trigger points that have been affected in her upper back areas. With this form of non-invasive treatment, we’ve created anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. Meet our karate choppin' patient Sophia! We wanted to finish this week out with a chiropractic success story... Sophia was brought in by her parents with a complaint of muffling and popping noises in both of her ears that's been ongoing for the past 2-3 months. Prior to visiting our office she was recommended to use a nasal spray and was prescribed two different antibiotics; both of those treatments didn't help. After that, her parents took her to an ear, nose, and throat specialist who recommended that she have ear tubes inserted. They didn't like that option so they chose our office for chiropractic care. During our examination an otoscope was used to check her ears with no redness or fluid present. There was tightness in the neck and upper back areas with the first and sixth neck bones misaligned (typically the first neck bone causes problems with ear aches and auditory issues). Those bones were gently adjusted using only our hands, and within just 4 visits she had no more muffling or popping noises. How amazing!
