We are excited to be invited back to work the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. We are seeking 150 ham radio operators (by comparison, the Boston Marathon uses 200 ham radio operators and the Marine Corps Marathon using 250 hams!) Of the majors, we are the smallest team. We have three basic teams: Course Medical Tents (CMT) with 2 – 8 hams assigned (depending on location); Pre-Finish Team for the last mile of the course and Triage team. These folks roam the zone after the finish line throughout Grant Park serving distressed runners.
The Chicago Marathon is considered one of the 6 major world Marathons – New York, Boston, London, Berlin and Tokyo. It is a privilege for us to work with this class of events.
This year they are looking to increase the field to 55,000 runners. That means more stress on the medical teams and us.
We have been successful working alongside Chicago Event Management for 17 years largely because of the community of ham radio folks we have attracted. This year, we are seeing more non-ham communicators working with us. Many stations are using hybrid radio communications to talk between their teams and our forward command operations.
Again, to sign up, please go to this link: https://forms.gle/i7GFgy5icnip1wP48

2023 Bank of America Chicago Marathon Ham Radio Medical Com Team 08/14/2023

This is the start of our 15th year serving the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. I reluctantly admit, I was a doubter when we started this project that the ham radio community would pull together to make this happen, but thanks to all of you, we have succeeded and really brought a positive spotlight to our avocation. Congratulations to all of you. I would like to acknowledge a few among you who have served this event almost from the beginning and at almost every year since we started: Matt Mason, Dan Elekman, Dave Kleckner, Ralph Bardzitis, Kate Saccany, George Slominski and Rob Orr. If we missed anyone, please let us know.
We have become a little more formalized. This past year we organized into a corporation to help serve this event and others. We call ourselves Ham Radio Chicago (hamradioChicago.org) and we are in the process of applying for a 501cIII. The hope is that we can provide support to other events and to other clubs who are working on events with training, expertise, manpower, and eventually equipment. We are a service club serving other clubs and events. Right now, we don’t have a membership process in place, but we are contemplating how that might work. We currently have a 9 member Board and will be in touch.
Meanwhile, it is time to register for the 2023 Marathon. Please fill out the Google Form below to get the process started

You are this list because you have other served or expressed interest in serving this event. If you want your name removed, please contact me directly ([email protected])
Our sincerest thank for your support!

While the winter season is upon us and not leaving any time soon, you may come across disabled vehicles or vehicles in ditches.

We want motorists to call it in when someone needs our help however, please be aware of vehicles in ditches or on the shoulders with orange tags, orange tape or caution tape of some sort on the vehicles. This means that the vehicle has been checked and there is no need to call and report it.

Making my final push for ops to help out with the Starved Rock Nationals car show here just outside Ottawa at Skydive Chicago I had quite a few respond on posts but they got buried and may have not made it to the email list. I'm hoping to get the incident action plan out a week prior so email me at [email protected] or on messenger with your phone number and email address (if sending on messenger) so I can get assignments set. Also please forward this info to anyone that might be interested that doesn't use Facebook.

We also have a booth approved by the ARRL to hand out info about amateur radio. This will be a great opportunity and demographic for furthering the hobby. So we need some ARRL members to man that booth.

Thanks again and 73
