Living in Florida, we all know how fast a nasty storm can come through on any given day. Sometimes, regular afternoon thunderstorms can cause more damage than tropical storms or even hurricanes that pass through!

So how can you keep your home and landscape prepared for a storm? Here's three simple ways to maintain your property to lower your risk of property damage.

1. Keep an eye on your "problem areas". This includes any trees and shrubs that are close to the house, trees that are unhealthy, or any lawn ornaments that aren't well secured.

2. Drainage problems can wreak havoc on not only your landscape, but also your home! If your home constantly has standing water after storms, it could indicate that the area needs some extra attention to help the water drain after a storm.

3. Keep all landscape debris secured, even if the forecast doesn't call for rain. Y'all know how fast a Florida storm can come through! Even if you are maintaining your landscape well by keeping it trimmed and neat, loose yard debris is a high risk for becoming a projectile during a storm.

All too often here in Florida, our beautiful native magnolias (Magnolia grandiflora) are plunked into the middle of lawns. They lose their large leathery leaves all through the year, so both you and the tree would be happier if you removed all the lawn that is within the leaf drop area and replaced it with acid-loving shrubs, bunching grasses, and ground covers. That way you won't need to rake up all those leaves (They will become mulch for the grove.) and eventually this area will become a better habitat for attracting birds and pollinators into your yard. In addition, the grove will absorb more storm water and cool the air in your yard because of the additional transpiration of the additional trees and shrubs. Also, because of the more rounded profile, a grove is more wind-tolerant than a single tree in the middle of the lawn. Cooling the air and increasing the wind tolerance are important assets in Florida.
