If you are concerned about your child’s development, you should always seek help from professionals. However, if your child does not meet criteria for services or if you have to wait for an evaluation or services (unfortunately waiting lists for early intervention are all too common), here are three ways you can help to advance your child’s development:⁣

1️⃣ Increase the language: Research consistently finds that the more you talk to your child, the more advanced language skills they will develop. In particular, research suggests that you should focus on back-and-forth conversations with your child (even if their response is only a babble or some type of movement). You don’t have to practice language in formal lessons or using flashcards– just work more language into your everyday routines. ⁣

2️⃣ Read to your child: Research suggests that reading to your child is associated with improved language and academic skills. Create a routine in which you read to your child at least once per day. Make sure you are not just reading the words but talking to your child about the book and allowing them to make comments or ask questions. ⁣

3️⃣ Play, play, play: Get on the floor and play with your child whenever you have a chance. Follow their lead in play and allow them to choose the activity and how the play goes. Research finds that this type of child-directed play helps to advance cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development. ⁣

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a group of inherited red blood cell disorders. SCD affects millions of people throughout the world and is particularly common among those whose ancestors come from sub- Saharan Africa; regions in the Western Hemisphere (South America, the Caribbean, and Central America); Saudi Arabia; India; and Mediterranean countries such as Turkey, Greece, and Italy.⁣

People with SCD can live full lives and enjoy most of the activities that other people do. If your child has SCD, it’s important to learn how to help them stay as healthy as possible. Review these SCD facts and always contact your child’s medical team with any questions or concerns. ⁣

Children experience all of the same complicated, wonderful, confusing, and big emotions that adults do. It’s okay to feel all emotions, including feelings that are pleasant and uncomfortable. Emotions are important because they provide us with information about ourselves and our environment. They help us connect with one another. Learning how to notice, label, and express their feelings helps children feel more in control of their emotional experiences. ⁣

Encourage your elementary schooler to watch this video of kids talking about their emotions. Even better — watch it with your child and discuss these key findings together:⁣

1️⃣ Label and name feelings to increase emotional vocabulary AND reinforce that you can feel more than one emotion at a time.⁣
2️⃣ Notice body sensations that are attached to different emotions and provide clues for what they are feeling. Sometimes it's easier to notice physical symptoms first.⁣
3️⃣ Rate the feeling of emotions on a scale of 1 to 10 to capture what we feel emotions in different amounts or intensities. ⁣

School demands many things that summer activities don’t — the ability to sit still, get organized, separate from their parents, etc. If your child suffers from anxiety, these demands can be very challenging. Here are 6 things parents need to know about starting school with vulnerable children:⁣

1. MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS EMERGE AT BACK-TO-SCHOOL TIME: You can ease your child’s anxiety by modeling confidence and calm behavior, and by imposing structure in family life (mealtime, homework, and bedtime routines). ⁣

2. KIDS BRAINS ARE CHANGING DRAMATICALLY: The teen brain starts “pruning”— strengthening some synapses and eliminating many others and this temporary imbalance has been linked to teens’ erratic and risky behaviors, depression, and more. Set aside time each day to talk to your child about challenges and new experiences at school. ⁣

3. ANXIOUS PARENTS SEND ANXIOUS KIDS TO SCHOOL: Kids really are like sponges, absorbing the energy and adopting the behaviors around them. One of the most helpful things you can do is model calm, confident behavior. ⁣

4. TEACHERS MATTER, EVEN MORE THAN YOU THINK: Parents can get all kinds of information about a child from their teacher. Teachers are allies, and you should talk to them regularly.⁣

5. HOMEWORK TIME IS CRUCIAL: Young children can benefit from their parents’ involvement during homework time. Parents should set aside time for a structured “homework session” each evening.⁣

6. DON’T JUMP TO CONCLUSIONS: A lag in one area of development doesn’t mean a child has a disorder. If you think there might be a problem with your child’s development, talk to their teacher. ⁣

Finding and eating or drinking medicines, without adult supervision, is the main cause of emergency visits for adverse drug events among children less than 5 years of age. Approximately 50,000 children less than 5 years of age are brought to emergency departments each year because of unsupervised ingestions. Preteens are at an important stage in their lives. They are starting to make some of their own choices. At the same time, they are still listening to you. That’s why this is a great time to teach them that exposure to loud noises can damage their hearing and that noise-induced hearing loss can build over time, is permanent, and preventable.⁣

The ability to hear well helps kids succeed in school, sports, and their personal relationships. Many everyday sources of noise, however, can potentially damage hearing. These environments can include school cafeterias, band rehearsals, concerts, sporting events, workshop equipment, and portable listening devices. ⁣
