🎉Celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month paying tribute to the generations of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our nation and society! 🪅

Forty-five years ago tonight we opened Square Books -- in the upstairs where Rare Square Books is today. After six years of marriage, Lisa and I had saved $10,000, and we borrowed another 10k from Mr. Cooper (after four requests) at the Bank of Oxford. Don Davidson built most of our fixtures. Julien Tatum and many others helped. Our rent was 100 bucks a month. We wondered if anyone would come to our opening event, but family and friends and -- to my astonishment -- strangers appeared. It was a good night, an incredible night.

As you likely know, we moved to a larger building in 1986, opened an annex (and later relocated it), then opened our pride and joy, Square Books Jr, and, not long ago, returned to these upstairs where we began, and where I presently write this.

Along the way, many great booksellers have contributed to the effort here. As we have grown, the people of Oxford. Lafayette County and University of Mississippi students and faculty continue to come -- or call or write (and text or email -- we didn't have a computer until 1992). And we have visitors from afar, many of them returning customers. The world has changed a lot, but your support for Square Books remains true.
