Elder NP live your best life until last breath. Integrate Holistic Coach, Oils & Pilates
"As I sat on the beach that day — sand between my toes, with my best friends from college at my side — I thought of how conversations about how we want to live at the end of our lives can and should happen whenever the opportunity arises. We should talk with those we care about where we feel comfortable and safe. We can have these discussions as often as we need them to make sure we are heard and listened to."
In her blog, our very own Patty Webster writes about the gift of starting conversations with your loved ones, how this can come up in any setting, with anyone it feels right to talk about with!

Speaking of Veterans... and End of life issues.
1 in 4 Medicare hospice patients is a U.S. military veteran. End of life workers need to know how to take care of their special needs and enhance their quality of life. It’s important for EOL teams to know the signs of PTSD and how to listen when these patients (and their caregivers!) are communicating what they need.
Many military veterans experience trauma, guilt, and anger, causing what is identified as “soul injury”. Having a soul injury or PTSD creates a need for specialized care. Opus Peace has a great inventory tool for assessing whether someone has experienced a soul injury. The Soul Inventory is available for free on the Opus Peace website. You can access the Soul Injury Inventory here.
Every discipline on the hospice team, including the End of Life (or Death) Doula, brings skills that seriously ill and terminally ill veterans need. The caregivers providing support for those veterans need support as well. Those caregivers are advocates, coordinators, and spokespersons for the veterans they care about.

Young , children caregivers are growing in numbers like never before. The need for in home care is growing like crazy. (Many reasons). Reality is children under 18 year old are taking major caregiving roles. Reality: I've seen it first hand; where a 10 year assist a grandparent with repositioning or elimination needs, spoon feeding or drinking assistance. Ive had patients tell me their young family member was the person who administered their IV medications. Often times, the child navigates the HC system for the sick person, rather it's a parent or grandparent.
The children I've seen in action are empathetic, aware, organized, respectful, organized, conscience, responsible as they have grown up fast to make a difference in the household. These children are missing out on a lot ( imo) but their empathy, compassion and ability to live and be connected are priceless and can't really be taught.
(( I look around at a majority of kiddos, and can't imagine if they had to be in this situation).
Families struggling to afford home care leading to more youth caregivers: nonprofit founder Connie Siskowski, president of the American Association of Caregiving Youth, said the economy and an aging population needing more complex care has led to more youth caregivers.

Remote patient monitoring (RPM) covers a wide variety of services a provider may offer to monitor or assess certain chronic conditions.
SMPs have received reports of RPM claims appearing on Medicare statements, like the Medicare Summary Notice (MSN) and/or Explanation of Benefits (EOB), without beneficiaries recognizing these services.

Should we discuss end of life, death with children? In my expert option, Definitely. As we normalize discussions, with honest, loving kindness, decrease fear, the reality of life having an ending point is real. Truth.
As a hospice nurse, I've witnessed firsthand the impact of death on families and the profound intuitive understanding children can have when it's explained with care.
In sharing stories from the bedside, we uncover the lasting effects of shielding children from death and argue for their inclusion in the dying process.
In this week’s episode of the Ask a Death Doula Podcast, How to Talk with Children About Death, we peel back the layers of this topic and reveal why it's essential to introduce our youngest minds to the concept of mortality in a natural, healthy way.

We’re not just discussing the end of life; we're advocating for an early and healthy relationship with its reality. The lack of honest conversation about death sets children up to have a dysfunctional relationship with it their ENTIRE life.
