Working in the studio today on a special project for a friend of ours. David Hanna did an excellent job. He laid down drums on 15+ songs in two sessions ( a session is 3hrs ). Most of them on the first take.

I found this among my things today. The first headless guitar I ever saw 1973. Which was like a backpack guitar built today. This apparatus was originally mage within the next 2 years 1974-75 by Roland Fraser. We moved from Perris California to the desert in 1979 and all this was created long before we left Perris. This tail-piece was built in 80-81 for a guitar we never finished.
All I'm going to say is when applying for a patent don't use the disclosure ogfice.

In this world of digital 'everything," we seldom ever talk about analog. But, in reality, acoustic sounds including the human voice are analog. A microphone receives an analog signal before it's converted into digital.
A medium quality mic with the right placement can give you tremendous results.
With analog, loss of signal or sound is always a concern. But, sometimes acceptable loss can be an advantage creating a unique sound.

Maybe you wrote a song? What next? The arrangement of a song begins in the demo. So, just don't record it, get a proper DEMO

02/05/2022

Just finished a two song demo of originals for a client. Now, they are on there way to Nashville for production. It is always good to have a demo with at least a light arrangement. Many times decisions made in the demo follow a song forever.

Without music the world is silent

06/20/2021

In this digital age we live in it is easy for almost anyone to record. Even our cell phones can download recording apps, some with multiple tracks. People now feel less of a need to go into a studio to work.

I'll admit this new technology does make life so much easier. Pieces of a project can be recorded in various places across the country, or around the world. Allowing access to some of the best musicians and singers you could ever find.

But why the studio?

There is this thing called environment. The right environment can make all the difference in the world.

Even when a single musician or singer is working with an engineer or producer, there are at least two people working on a single idea. A lot of good ideas come from these times.

Another issue is acoustics. In this age of electronic instruments we forget that some things just sound better acoustically.

Acoustic flat top guitars, drums, fiddles and violins, brass, horns, woodwinds piano, harmonica and many more are in this family of acoustic instruments.

Your acoustical environment help shape the sound to give you what you're looking for on a recording. Studios large and small often have already tackled this issue in having what I call a tuned room.

Once a room is acoustically tuned it can make mic placement and other options for a great sound a lot easier.

Even in the smallest environments professional we'll figure out ways to get the correct sound. There is no app or Plugin that can give you the sound.

I have been to many studios that reflected many different theories. Some thought the more sound absorbed the better.

Carpet covered Studios ceiling walls and floor are not really ideal. They will work but they absorb too much sound.

One Studio I was in had a cement floor and rock walls. It was very live. Their theory was, you can make a live room dead but you can't make a dead room live. It's a good theory but if you have to work at it a lot it can take a lot of time to tune that room up each time you want to use it.

Sound is a matter of preference and it must be pleasing to the ear. So there is no hard line but Acoustics and environment play a major role in a sweet sound recorded on any type of recording equipment.

The best touch of course, is the human touch.

The Nashville brief

I often get asked about Nashville, especially when it comes to the Nashville sound. Some people wonder why the music has changed so drastically over the last few years?

It is true, that the ancestral DNA of country music can barely be traced from today's modern version.

Since there is no clear-cut reason for this drastic change, coupled with the distaste from those in country music that favored more Traditional Values, let me give you some theories. Some might even call them conspiracy theories.

There's always been a fine thread that connected east coast labels and West Coast labels with the music scene in Nashville Tennessee. I personally think that the music business is a delicate ecosystem and a drastic change in one place can cause ripples all the way across the nation and perhaps around the world.

So, one theory is when seemingly in one day on the West Coast heavy metal and glam rock bands lost their contracts with record labels so did A&R people and others that worked in the industry. this indeed created quite a ripple. But whether it actually affected other genres of music I believe is still undetermined. But it is possible that this was the first step of many.

Some people believe it was totally about killing off traditional country music. Cutting off the head of the snake so to speak, would separate artist from their loyal fan base.

If you indeed wanted to take over an industry what happened in Nashville would be considered The Perfect Storm. In the years that followed the purchase of the Grand Ole Opry, Opryland, Music City News Magazine and other interests, country music did take on a brand new face. But, I personally think it was a much larger scheme and the music is just part of it.

To change the face of the Nashville scene you would need to have Executives and A&R and other employees strategically-placed at record labels who were not traditional country music loyalists.

Secondly, you would need to control the narrative. One of the issues with Music City news is that it was totally fan based. You could not have the fans saying one thing and the industry's saying another. Ironically the paper was purchased and then shut down.

The largest platforms included the Grand Ole Opry which change rapidly. No one can explain why Opryland disappeared since it was popular and a money maker. The only thing that could be possible is that it was too steeped in traditional country music to be of any use for a new agenda.

Now, all of the things mentioned actually happened in one form or another. But, the why is not clear.

One large Theory has to do with the use of conservative country music artists in successful political campaigns. if country music was largely a platform for the right then certainly dismantling it would be a good plan for the politically motivated Left.

Another thing would be controlling the artist. Record labels often loved one hit wonders or artist to have minimal releases, because these are the artists they have most control over. As an artist develops they gain more artistic license with their products and have more leverage with a record label.

In the end however it is the Golden Rule that wins out. He who has the most gold rules. If an entity has enough money and power to buy out and change an entire industry, this would definitely be a force to reckon with.

What we know as truth is, Nashville has changed and it most likely will never be the same again.
