Fed lets the cut out of the bag

No reading between the lines here! The notes from the Fed's last meeting were explicit about "likely" upcoming rate cuts. And remember, that meeting happened BEFORE: 1) the July CPI came in lower than expected, and 2) the 818K downward revision to jobs growth from the March 2024 QCEW report.

BLS Jobs Report (July 2024)There’s more evidence of weakness in the labor sector. Job growth in July was well below estimates, as the BLS reported that 114K new jobs were created versus the 175K that were forecasted. Revisions to the data for May and June also cut 29K jobs from those months combined. The unemployment rate rose to 4.3%, the highest since 2021.

Many members of the Fed have indicated when the unemployment rate hits 4.2%, they will start cutting rates. What does this mean for consumers and households?

New Home Sales (June 2024)

Signed contracts on new homes fell for the second straight month in June, coming in below estimates to reach their lowest level since November. While the supply of new homes on the market has increased, more completed homes are still needed to help meet demand.

Fed "Getting Closer" to Rate Cuts

After friendly inflation readings throughout the second quarter, more Fed members are signaling they are "getting closer" to cutting interest rates, with growing odds of a cut happening at their meeting on September 18. Inflation and labor market data between now and then will play a pivotal role in this decision.

BLS Jobs Report (June 2024)

June’s job growth was just above estimates, as the BLS reported that 206K new jobs were created. However, there were big revisions to previous months, as the data for April and May shaved 111K jobs from those months combined. The unemployment rate rose to 4.1%, the highest since November 2021, triggering the reliable Sahm Rule and suggesting we’re already in a recession.
