Pasadena's North Hill Avenue Complete Streets Project is making roads safer and improving mobility! Launched by the City of Pasadena Department of Transportation in 2016, this complete streets initiative aims to calm traffic and enhance safety along North Hill Avenue. Responding to residents' concerns about speeding motorists, the City has installed one roundabout at Hill Avenue and Topeka to reduce vehicle speeds and improve conditions for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike. A second roundabout is planned to be installed at Hill Avenue and Elizabeth. Why roundabouts? Roundabouts (or traffic circles) are chosen for their safety and efficiency benefits. Studies show that roundabouts provide: 90% reduction in fatal crashes; 76% reduction in injury crashes; 30-40% reduction in pedestrian crashes; and 10% reduction in bicycle crashes Unlike stop signs or even traffic signals, you can’t really “run” a roundabout. You have to slow down for it. Additionally, roundabouts contribute positively to environmental health. By ensuring smoother traffic flow, they reduce vehicle idling times, reduce emissions, and contribute to cleaner air and quieter neighborhoods. Economically, roundabouts present a cost-effective alternative to signalized intersections. They require less maintenance and can manage higher traffic volumes more efficiently, offering a pragmatic solution for city planners looking to invest in long-term infrastructure improvements. Navigating a roundabout is as easy as 1-2-3: 1️⃣ Slow down and give way to those already inside 2️⃣ Yield to pedestrians crossing the street 3️⃣ Signal when exiting to inform other drivers Cyclists should follow the same rules as cars when navigating a roundabout, taking the lane and circulating around it. If you're uncomfortable riding in the roundabout, you can use pedestrian crosswalks, walking your bike across. Pasadena's use of roundabouts demonstrates a commitment to improving safety for residents and
