Today, Kimberly Shriner, MD, FACP, medical director of infection prevention and control, Huntington Health, founder of Phil Simon Clinic Tanzania Project (PSCTP), and 14 Huntington-associated volunteers began their 12th trip to Arusha, Tanzania. The PSCTP is a nonprofit organization that provides clinical and specialty care, veterinary care, education, and social work in East Africa. It also offers a health care scholarship program to alleviate Tanzania's physician and nurse shortage. “We are excited to return to Tanzania after a 5-year COVID-induced hiatus,” said Dr. Shriner. “Although we accomplished a lot with the growth of our scholarship program here during the pandemic, it is always wonderful to be back on the ground with our colleagues and friends in East Africa.” Visit bit.ly/49rXkSNto learn more about the PSCTP and their plans for this trip. When Celina Lemon and her husband, Juan, found out they were pregnant with twin baby girls, they were overjoyed. However, on March 8, 2023, at 32 weeks pregnant, Celina woke up hypertensive and losing consciousness. With three lives hanging in the balance, Celina was rushed to Huntington Hospital's Nan and Howard Schow Emergency & Trauma Center, where more than 25 caregivers across three departments were mobilizing. What happened that day and in the days that followed forever changed the lives of all involved. Read their story: HuntingtonHealth.org/patient-story/emergency-cesarean-section

As a Level II Trauma Center, Huntington Hospital stands prepared to treat trauma patients 24/7. However, our caregivers emphasize that effective trauma care starts the moment an injury occurs. Frequently, it is the know-how of a bystander that gives our patients a second chance at life. That means YOU could increase a person's chance of survival before they reach our doors. Introducing STOP THE BLEED® - a free, educational session where you will learn how to control the severe bleeding that follows a traumatic injury. The program offers hands-on demonstrations and valuable information on using tourniquets and packing to control bleeding after a traumatic event. “Severe bleeding can kill someone within minutes before EMS or other public safety providers arrive,” says trauma program manager Michelle Baker, RN. “This training can help everyone – from an experienced physician to an elementary school teacher – learn how to help stop or control an actively bleeding injury, which may have resulted from a fall, car crash, work accident, or an active shooter event.” If you are interested in hosting a STOP THE BLEED® training session for your workplace, school, or organization, email [email protected].

It was a beautiful Sunday in 2022 – Easter Sunday. Proud owners of a new car, Wendy and Jonathan decided to go for a drive along the Angeles Crest Highway. Well into their drive, something went wrong — terribly wrong. “What happened next is like a blur,” says Wendy, but one thing was certain: The couple had been in a serious car accident — and their lives hung in the balance. Everything happened so fast. Wendy remembers another vehicle almost on top of their car. First responders arrived on scene, and once extracted from the vehicle, Wendy and Jonathan were rushed to Huntington Hospital’s Level II Trauma Center in a medevac helicopter. They both had life-threatening injuries, including stomach and intestinal damage and many broken bones. When they arrived at the hospital, Huntington’s expert trauma team, led by medical director of trauma services, Amal Obaid-Schmid, MD, were standing by. “My next memory is of the bright lights of the operating room and asking for my husband,” says Wendy. One year later, Jonathan and Wendy are sharing their story of survival. “Huntington saved our lives,” says Wendy. “Telling our story is our way of saying thank you and paying back what they did for us. If anything were to happen to us in the future, it’s where we would want to go. I know we’re in great hands with Huntington.” Read on: https://bit.ly/3EUtoS1 #CompassionateCommunityCare
